Gadgets and Gear for Travelers: Fall 2016
By Max Hartshorne
Here is a round-up of some useful travel gear that we heard about for our traveling readers Christmas lists.
My Bumper. This is a case that charges your iPhone. This one is a bit lighter than the many others out there, and is a good solution if you're going somewhere where you know you'll lose your charge, in case that happens, plug this in and you've got another 10 hours of battery left.
"mybumper battery case gives you 10 hours of extra battery to keep you alive throughout your busiest days. Connect the lightning cable and watch your phone charge at the speed of your apple wall charger." $65.00
Paracable Continuum 5' power cable Super durable cords to charge iPhones made with a fabric that's tougher than most cords. "Premium paracord-wrapped Apple Lightning cables in stunning colors and patterns. Our unique manufacturing process ensures durability and longevity in all of our beautifully colored and textured cables.
Paracable is the original parachute-cord wrapped cable. Don't be fooled by imitators. Compatible with: iPhone 5 / iPhone 5s iPhone 6 / iPhone 6+ iPhone 6s / iPhone 6s + iPhone SE iPad Mini iPad Air iPad Pro iPod Touch 5th generation iPod Nano 7th generation iPad 4th generation Apple TV Siri Remote.
4-star review: "just received, ahead of scheduled delivery, cord is well built and works. Most importantly to me is that it fits an Otter Defender series case. I just wish it came in 10' length."
We have received several cords like this and so far, this one has lasted the longest. $24.95
Advanced Model 3 wireless in-ear monitors. These get good reviews from customers. We found them easy to connect to an Iphone using bluetooth as long as you follow the instructions, and the sound quality is great! These would be good for exercising or flying as you can comfortable strap them behind your neck.
"ADVANCED Model 3 wireless in-ear monitors utilize professionally tuned, Super Wideband micro-dynamic drivers that deliver warm and rich true high-resolution audio over wireless connection. The hi-fi truly breaks free from the wires with the Model 3." These are a step up from the JVC models reviewed below. $79.99
JVC Gummy Wireless bluetooth headphones Enjoy crisp audio with these JVC Gummy Bluetooth wireless headphones. The sweat-proof design makes them suitable for sports and other outdoor activities, and the three-button remote provides added control over volume and song choice. These JVC Gummy Bluetooth wireless headphones include a rechargeable battery that provides up to 7 hours of continuous play.
5 Star Review: These earbud headphones produce good clear sound. The wireless capability is awesome and gives the user quite a lengthy range from the device in which it is connected. GoNOMAD Editor Max Hartshorne has been using these on his morning jogs and has found them to work quite well, though to keep the right earpiece in, you must put it in upside down. $39.99 at Best Buy.
Gobi Gear Atoll Blue Segsac 15L Compress Glacier Blue Segsac "Quick Product Details 3.0oz in weight 2 sizes available: 15 Liter and 20 Liter Ultra-light 30D nylon 4 Interior compartments Drawstring closure at top Tall draft collar for a tight seal NO PLASTIC is used in our packaging or shipping process (please note, this stuff sack does not have an attachment point for a shoulder strap)" $19.99
Circle with Disney. This is a tool that provides parents with the ability to see everything that every screen is looking at in their home, and set timers, block and monitor on-line activities by minors.
We gave this device to one of our travel writers who has a houseful of six children, ages 7-17, and so far she is still testing to see what this can do. $99.00
Pack It Up!
Eagle Creek's new Pack-It line of bags that fit inside your suitcase solve a range of problems for travelers. When we received the box full of the various sizes of bags, my partner Mary called dibs.
She liked the size of the Quilted Quarter Cube, with a zippered top and a cool quilted design. These small bags are very useful when you are trying to keep all your stuff in the suitcase straight, and not lost in the folds of clothing. Very useful! $29.95
We found them not as comfortable as a sleep mask, but they appear just like regular sunglasses and are definitely more sleek than a sleeping mask.
The pillowtie is designed to work for any neck pillow on the market, and is used on flights to attach your neck pillow to your seat and keep your head from falling forward or sideways. The descriptions states it is intended to improve back, neck, and spine support for a healthier sleep.
We haven't tested it out yet, but it seems a bit expensive at $14.99. Might be worth it if it really does keep your muscles from straining on flights.
