Since 1977, ship captains from across the eastern seaboard have rendezvoused every July 4th weekend at Penobscot Bay to compete in the Maine Windjammer Association’s annual Great Schooner Race. The race highlights historic wooden vessels like the American Eagle, a designated National Historic Landmark that was built in 1930 and restored from the water-line up in the mid-1980s.
