Sleep Tips from an Insomniac and Sleep Medicine Doctors
By Max Hartshorne
Sleep has been on our minds as we ramp back up to traveling this fall and we adjust. Here are several new items that will improve your quality of sleep, whether you’re at home or in a hotel on a trip.
Sleep deprivation is something nobody wants to deal with on a trip. I picked up these tips when I visited a doctor who specializes in behavioral therapy for sleep and he said the following:
Always pay attention to the signals you give out when you get tired. Take the first yawn as the sign to begin winding down and going to sleep. If you don’t do this, you’ll start another cycle and you will be more tired.
Also try to avoid using screens in the bedroom. It’s best when that room is used only for sleep and snuggling and not entertainment and screen reading. If you want to get sleepy, read something in print. But don’t lie down in bed until you definitely feel that sleepy feeling is present.
Avoid taking naps, try simple meditation to relax and calm you, but try to stay awake during that time. Be patient and allow yourself to change your sleep habits. Some people get along fine with as few as four hours of sleep, your body will tell you when you are getting enough sleep.
