Enjoy Flying without Fear with A Fear of Flying Course

By Marina Renzi

Flying doesn’t scare me, however, suddenly not flying does. Millions of people suffer from a fear of flying which is completely normal and natural. One man named Tim Griffin is combating these fears by offering courses to help ease people’s minds about air travel.

One of the ways that Tim works with people to help them overcome this fear is by learning what exactly is the driving force behind the phobia. For many people, it stems from one thing: anxiety. This could be anxiety about turbulence, different types of mechanical and technological failures, lack of control, possible death and other risks, and even anxiety about the unknown.

Through courses, treatments, and training, FlyHome helps curb these fears and show people that flying isn’t as scary as it seems, and that it can actually be fun.

What is FlyHome?

Created by frequent flyer Timothy Griffin, FlyHome is a company that lends a hand to weary travelers prior and during their departures. Griffin has worked with several high-profile clients, and has since seen every kind of anxious person before travel. By working closely with Griffin, becoming a confident flyer will be something you can look forward to and be proud of accomplishing.

Some of the services that FlyHome offers are one-on-one sessions with Tim to help combat the fears and anxieties involved with flying, access to the instructor immediately before any trip to help with concerns about aircraft model, routes, weather, turbulence, and anxiety relief, and also in-flight consultations with an instructor by your side the entire length of your trip.

All of these services lend a hand to improving travel confidence and increase your chances of feeling safe on any flight you take.

I personally don’t mind flying, however, there are always times where I get a little stressed out, so having a service like FlyHome seems very helpful and an encouraging way to overcome any flying-related fears.

How Did FlyHome Start?

FlyHome is an incredibly unique company and it helps thousands of people a year, so how did this idea even come to life? Founder and CEO of FlyHome, Tim Griffin, shared a little bit of his story with us.

“The idea came about early on in my career, as I recognized that there was a lot of downtime in hotel rooms, as well as at home, and I can either go out and golf, or I can try to make use of my downtime.

I officially set forth on forming the company when my primary care doctor said to me on a routine physical, that I was in the “wrong field”. I asked her what she meant by that, and she told me that with my personality, my knowledge of flying, and the number of prescriptions that she writes on a daily basis for people going on vacation, but are anxious flyers, she told me that she felt I can really help them. After that, I formed a test group and applied my theories, and it has helped numerous people worldwide.”

Up, Up, and Away

For Fly Home, the process of working with new clients about their fears is an important part of overcoming that anxiety. One of the first steps that FlyHome offers is a questionnaire on their website that asks questions like “Is your fear the result of a bad experience on an aircraft in the past?”, “Have you taken any actions to eliminate your fear already?”, and “How many times do you typically fly?” among several others.

As a professional pilot, Tim Griffin answered some questions about his flying experiences to ease the minds of others. Griffin, who has flown thousands of hours and on thousands of aircraft reported that he has never had a bad experience in the air, so this will hopefully bring comfort to others.

“I never had a bad experience, No. I have encountered severe turbulence, as any professional pilot has, and I explain in-depth all about turbulence, and how it is not a factor, nor should it be a worry for the passengers. Provided they are wearing their seatbelt and adhering to crewmember instructions!”

Answering Honestly

The questionnaire you can take on the website is very easy and straightforward, however, the best results of the course come from honesty from within, so it is important to answer each question as honestly as possible.

A Customized Treatment Plan

I took the questionnaire and found it very easy and quick to complete. Once the questionnaire is finished, FlyHome will review the results and create a treatment plan along with a few courses specifically designed to cater to your needs.

Griffin, the founder of the company, also shared that “One piece of advice is to learn more about it, knowledge is power when it comes to flight anxiety, the more you know, the better you’ll feel.

Who better to teach it to you than a Current Professional Pilot? Oh, and learning DOES NOT come from watching videos on YouTube!”

This makes a lot of sense because in order for someone to feel more comfortable with flying, why not learn from the best!

Courses Offered

If there is anything worth noting, it’s that knowledge is the best way to overcome this type of fear. Being able to think rationally is the most important aspect to dealing with anxiety, and through some coursework, FlyHome can help.

Flight21 is the course that FlyHome uses in order to help its clients feel good about traveling. This course will provide 21 days worth of short lessons to help you rethink and reimagine the joys of flying.

The topics that are included in the Flight21 course are turbulence, air traffic control systems, pilot training and testing requirements, meditation, relaxation techniques, anxiety-reducing techniques, airplane 101, and weather.

One of the best features of this course is the fact that it allows members exclusive access to the weather control readers which is something that I am incredibly jealous of. Before a flight, I love to check any impending weather, but unfortunately, I don’t know how to read those systems, but with FlyHome, part of the lesson is learning those weather reports. Knowledge is simply the best way to combat fear.
