In reading this article it brought back some memories. My wife and I were there some 18 months ago. We were there for 3 nights and stayed at a beautiful heritage hotel on the water. We took a walking tour and people watched and ate and enjoyed. Great place to escape and what was written in this article expand what we did. Good article.

I think they got the idea for the Sao Bento Station from the Long Island Railroad. I see the similarities.
I would like to see that McDonalds.. I have been to one in an old railroad car and one in an old mansion and have
seen a photo of a DC-3 converted into one.
    All really cool !!

Looks good–I would like to see the McDonalds–I have been to one in an old train car, one in a beautiful old mansion, and a picture of one in an old DC-3 (which is my favorite plane). A Micky D burger once in a long while won’t kill you but having a glass of wine with it would be a good idea.
I bet they got the idea for the Sao Bento train station from the LIRR (so I have a vivid imagination – it doesn’t make me a bad person) !!

This is so amazing and beautiful, it makes me want to go there now!
Re-inventing yourself in 2013 was the best thing…for you and all of us out here in the world that get to “experience your journeys” with you. Thank you for sharing with us.

Hi Tab—Wish I had seen your article prior to my Porto visit last year. I did and saw a lot, really. But I missed some of your suggestions that I know I would have enjoyed visiting. One commenter mentioned the hills. Yes, yes!I knew in advance that many of Porto’s streets (Sentra too) were like San Francisco but with cobblestones. I was prepared with a fold-up cane in my backpack but found some of those uphill climbs difficult. Best, Doris

Great article about Porto. I spent 5 days there last year and didn’t do some of the fancier things you did! Might have to go back for more. I would add there are LOTS of hills and stairs so you need to be fit if you want to walk it all. Wish I packed lighter haha

Tab, you’ve strongly ignited my desire to go there and see for myself. Can’t say that for many travel writers. Well played, sir. BTW, having been to Lisbon and Sintra, I already know what a treasure Portugal can be. Thanks.

Great article with so many great suggestions… we couldn’t fit them all in!! The Douro valley and wine tasting was my favorite! The food service and fresh fish can’t be beat. Thanks for sharing and we want to plan a return trip!

Thanks Tab for the great overview of Porto and Gaia with lots of useful information. I never heard of the Gaia area before and the wine tastings and insights into the history of port wine in this region make it an attractive destination. The “free” walking tour sounds like a good way to get the lay of the land before further exploration of the city.
That hotel – the rooms and restaurants look wonderful, but pricey. Enjoyed the article and photos – thanks!
