A New Year of Useful Travel Gadgets
For 2015, here are some new products that travelers will enjoy and others, well, you decide
Braven Wireless Waterproof Speaker
Yay! This speaker is marketed for outdoor enthusiasts. It has a waterproof exterior and shockproof rubber exterior as well as a powerbank to charge external devices like smartphones or MP3 players. Requires 1 lithium battery. It weighs 2.6 pounds. We have tested more than a dozen of these types of speakers, and this one stands out for the quality of the sound and ruggedness. Braven BRV-X Wireless Speaker $149
Rowenta Travel Steamer
Nay! This handhead steamer is suitable for delicate garments and quick touch ups. It takes just 50 seconds to heat up. It weighs 1.6 pounds. But if you have ever used a standard model steamer such as a Jiffy Steamer, you’ll be disappointed in this one–the water tank is tiny and it puts out a very small amount of steam. Some things are not really made to be reduced into a travelers’ size…I can’t imagine bringing this gadget along on a trip.
Rowenta DR6015 Ultrasteam Hand-Held Steam Brush with Travel Pouch, 800-Watt, Blue $29.99
Rowenta Compact Steam Iron
Maybe This travel iron has all the benefits of a full-sized iron in a travel-sized package. It can be used to steam vertical hanging garments or items laid flat, and comes with a travel pouch. Since most hotels usually have an iron, again I would doubt whether I’d tote this along…but maybe if you were going to a vacation rental house and wanted to have the option of ironing a shirt for going out, this compact little iron might come in handy.
Rowenta DA1560 Travel Compact Steam Iron with 200-Hole Stainless Steel Soleplate, 1000-Watt, Purple $39.95
Sol Republic Wireless Headphones
Yay!! These headphones connect to your device through Bluetooth and has a range of up to 150 feet. The headband can be changed out for one of another color. After you have used wireless headphones while running, you pretty much never want to go back to wired ones again. The sound is very clear, even when you’re wearing a wool cap. These are highly recommended!
SOL REPUBLIC 1430-00 Tracks Air Wireless On-Ear Headphones, Gunmetal $198.50
Tego Wireless Speaker
Maybe This little speaker lifts up at the top to create a 360 dispersion of sound. It can play for 5-7 hours without a charge and weighs less than a pound. For something so small, this has a nice weight to it and decent sound. A little pricey versus the many other speakers that are out there these days. Tego Audio Cera V3.0 Wireless Portable Bluetooth Speaker Red $67.99
Xquisit Bluetooth Headphones
Yay! This headset connects wireless to a device through bluetooth. It can play without a charge for up to 10 hours. The price is much less than the Sol Republic and the sound is pretty close. These are a little more basic but are recommended for value and durability.
Xqisit LZ380 Bluetooth Stereo Headset – Matte Black $69.99
Maybe This traveler clock is intended to help you minimize jet lag. The little dome simulates a sunrise, getting brighter and brighter to wake you up. One user said he liked not having to worry about power, in case of a power failure. It’s powered either by batteries or AA batteries and contains a built in flashlight. This is about 4 1/2″ in diameter, which for some might be a little large for a suitcase. Yet many business travelers have said that this method of waking up is preferable to the beep beep beep in the dark of a strange hotel room. SunRise Traveler Clock $49.95
Yay This little powergrid serves as a backup battery for your tech devices and connects with a USB cord. It’s hefty little unit but it packs a lot of power compared with many other batteries on the market. Another cool feature is that this battery comes in three colors–lime green, bright pinks and North Carolina blue. $59.95
TEGO POWER POWERGRID 4200 MAH
Tego Power Cable
Maybe This cable allows you to charge almost any device that uses a micro USB connector. It has a lightning pin and a USB connector, which means it can charge virtually any device from the past 5 years. It’s nice having all three plugs available on one cord, if you’re traveling with different types of phones or devices. $29.99 Tego Power Trio Cable
