I once flew as an air courier back in the ’80s. The ‘FB OnBoard’ company flew me from Toronto to Amsterdam, but they seemed poorly organized. With my departure time from Toronto approaching ever closer, with the promised rendezvous times having long passed, the flakey company reps finally materialized. Whew!

I did my job as promised then, but after returning home told them straight up that I found their lack of professionalism to be unacceptable. Never did business with them again.

    One traveler’s humble opinion.
    I am done. The end.

I would be interested to be an air courier to South America. Any ideas where can I apply?

Frank, nobody really does air courier jobs any more, so you’re not gonna find that.

I did it twice in 2000: SFO-Tokyo-Singapore. First flight was $450 with about a weeks notice, second trip 2 days notice for $250. First trip was only 8 days, second was for 30 days. Loved it. flew Japan Airlines all the way, both trips and was able to visit Malaysia and Indonesia as well.

Your age is really showing. No courier companies flying from North America to Europe? Does anyone actually believe that? I flew from NYC to Germany last week.

Of course there are many small courier companies around the US. To say that the industry is “done” is ridiculous. To get into the industry though, you definitely need to know someone.

I did courier runs for years from 1995 to 2007 always to Asia; Tokyo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Bangkok. I’ve flown out of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City. I thought all courier services have gone out of business. I flew for $130 if I scheduled within the week, I’ve only paid $400 once but I also flew for nothing when I was called at the last minute. Never received money but I received many perks

I work as an air courier and pay absolutely nothing plus they pay me. A trip to Asia pays $800 in my pocket. They reimburse me for excess luggage. I also sign up for frequent flyer miles with different airlines and collect mileage. I am also reimbursed for all expenses including hotel(one night only), parking, taxis, cart rentals, phone card, fuel cost, etc. If I have to wait an extended amount of time they compensate me for the time. The company I work for is a subcontractor for FEDEX. If I want to stay longer in a country I just pay the change fee with the airlines. My last trip to Hiroshima, Japan was great. I concluded work in Narita with the customs broker so I didn’t have anything to do in Hiroshima. My driver in Hiroshima was in shock. The car service was already booked and couldn’t be canceled. It cost the client $600 for my driver to take me to the hotel. I just did a trip to Chicago September 27, 2018. Plane was delayed because of mechanical problems in Houston. Got in late and finished business in 20 minutes. Went to the Best Western and stayed 1 1/2 hours which cost the client $150. Already booked.

      Hello Philip,

Any chance your company is seeking additional help? I am able to fly for extremely cheap globally and would like to take advantage of this being an air carrier. I am very flexible and willing to go anywhere in the world united airlines travel to,

      Thanks

It’s pretty much over, I don’t know anyone who does this and makes money in the age of Fed-X and instant messages. Sorry Grace!

      Hi Philip,
I have just read your article and would be interested in working as an air courier.
I am based in London, England and would like to know if you could give me any advice, and if you could tell me if any companies are currently recruiting couriers.

      Kind Regards,

      Richard

Thank you for this really interesting article.
I’ve been trying to find such companies or agencies, but I came across posts for courier, not air courier. By any chance, do you have any name?
I’m based in Bangkok, do you know if it is a hub for this kind of business or most likely, the closest hub is Tokyo?
Thank you in advance and thank you again for this really interesting article!

Raphaelle, I am not aware of any courier companies that are seeking to hire people. With Fed-x and UPS, the game is up. Sorry.

Memory lane for sure! I did it, I flew from NY to Sydney, Australia with TNT Skypak in 1988 and it was so cheap. I still had to pay a little, under $400 but at that time a round trip to Sydney was over $2,000.
I was restricted to a carry-on but that was fine by me. Stayed for a month. Great trip and unaffordable any other way. It’s a shame if people can’t do this anymore
