Thailand: A Cozy Bangkok Bookshop Worth Discovering
Dasa Books is the Place for People Who Love Used Bookstores
By Alex Lane
“Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack. Besides, in this random miscellaneous company, we may rub against some complete stranger who will, with luck, turn into the best friend we have in the world.” ― Virginia Woolf, >Street Haunting
A world of discovery awaits at the Dāsa Bookstore, in the Sukhumvit district of Bangkok, Thailand. This delightful used bookstore will provide hours of intrigue for book-loving visitors and residents alike.
The cozy shop houses three stories of bookshelves, packed floor to ceiling, books stacked upon each other and hanging from the walls. Browsers can lose an entire morning or afternoon amidst the shelves, passing from genre to genre and revealing the treasures within.
Mostly English Language
There are over 18,000 selections of mostly English-language titles, but also a choice of titles in various European languages, such as French and Norwegian. A sign hanging on the first floor directs visitors to where they can find their desired genre. The aroma of fresh coffee expands through the air amidst the hum of light chatter and sales transactions.
Scattered throughout the bookshop are chairs and stools to allow browsers to sit comfortably as they explore the shelves. There is a communal table on the first floor where readers can sit, drink coffee, enjoy their latest finds and meet new friends.
Prices for used books at Dāsa are fair. Generally, they are listed at about half of the original cover price, which is standard for used books. However, even better deals can easily be found with a little patience and browsing. Dāsa offers book exchange and bookselling services if you have titles taking up space in your apartment or suitcase.
Check the Dasabase
This bookstore carries only used books but has a wide range of titles. An excel spreadsheet, called the Dasabase is available on the bookshop website and lists the entirety of their inventory, updated daily. Or, you can ask the shopkeeper in the store, who is happy to check their inventory for you.
The shopkeeper can often surmise how frequently they are able to stock a used book. If you are stalking a particular title, you can find a daily update on their website, which lists the titles that have come in each day.
This bookstore is easy and convenient to locate, only a short walk up the road from the Phrom Phang stop on the BTS Skytrain Sukhumvit line. If you are heading East on Sukhumvit Road, the bookstore will be on the right-hand side of the road and is easily visible as you are walking down the street.
Dāsa Bookstore is the place for used book lovers in Bangkok. It is a one-stop shop for those who love a good deal and enjoy the adventure of diving into the depths of the worlds held within a used bookstore. Dāsa provides a comfortable atmosphere, which invites visitors to browse for hours uninterrupted. It is a place that you will want to visit again and again.
