OKTATA and Mahindra, Is it OK?
Jai Arjun Singh has written an article in Business Standard on the Tata/Oktatabyebye standoff and Travel Tales from India has found a mention there-
As the website Travel Tales from India (http://tinyurl.com/l7p9av) puts it, “Tata owns the Jaguar and Land Rover car brands, the Taj Mahal Hotel and a very profitable software company. But do they own the English word Tata too? Looks like they think so. Even when the word has been in existence since 1823, much before the company website itself starts talking about its heritage!”

Let judiciary decide.
I suppose it all comes down to whether there has been commercial exploitation of the brand-name. For example, when an Indian manufacturer launched an underwear product called Benz, Daimler (then Daimler-Benz AG) successfully contested a lawsuit and the product had to be withdrawn.
On the other hand, it is also true that Benz was the surname/last-name of one of the founders of Daimler-Benz and the cars that the company produces were first named after the daughter of Mr. Benz, who was called Mercedes Benz. Obvioulsy, there must also be many Germans even now who have Benz as their surname/last-name.
BTW, it does indeed seem that there really is no word in the English language as Tata. The phrase that is used to express farewell, apparently, is ta-ta ( http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ta%20ta ).
Is the duel still on? I'm Tata's will lose it. They must :-D
Hobo, I don't thin so. What I mean to say through this picture is that many of us common people feel OK Tata is a wahy of greeting. Also the Tata Company is not known for such needless controversies.
Sidhu McDonald's lost a suit with McCurry in Malaysia, McCurry can do business under that name!
Sangfroid, to me this controversy seems bizarre.
