The Five Hilarious Travel Photo Contest
When I stumbled upon 'The Five Hilarious Travel Photo Contest' I said "why not!" So here I go.
The photo below was taken when we were doing a little bit of shopping in Leh (Ladakh, India). Till date we are clueless what does the sign Useless Wali (Useless One) means. Googling doesn't help much either.

And here we are in Sikkim (India) when our jeep skidded a bit on the snow. There were only two women passengers including myself and the menfolk decided that they could push the jeep out on their own. I was happy to get the opportunity to take the picture.

The second photo was taken again in the main market of Leh (Ladakh, India). I was asking these mild looking ladies (in Hindi) if I could take a photograph of them. My husband has a practice of standing 10 feet away from me on such occasions. To my surprise, the third lady from the left almost shouted her "NO" at me. There were two other gentlemen on the scene and they too looked a bit taken aback, though being foreigners to India they could only have guessed what was going on. Crestfallen, I started walking away. Then she called me back again and asked if I wanted to photograph her alone or the entire group? When I said the entire group, she smiled and said I could take one.
The two gentlemen sensing a change in the mood asked me if they too could take a photograph. I acted the interpreter and the ladies said yes to them too. One of them ran and sat next to the ladies. And here is the picture I got after a little bit of scolding. But the best part is after putting it at my blog (earlier) I got a comment form a person saying he knows the second person from the left in the picture. It is a small world.

The third photo was taken on our journey to Bharmour (Himachal Pradesh, India). We had these two goats as our fellow passengers in the bus. I will have to add, they were very well behaved even if a little bit smelly.

In this fourth picture my husband strikes a pose with a buffalo (I guess so) skull that he found on the Kuari Pass trek (Uttranchal, India). What wonders does spending time with nature does to people!

Nice off the track post ;) Is it ongoing contest ?
Check my blog.
Even I had some interesting co-passengers on my recent trip.
Cuckoo, this contest closes tonight or tomorrow afternoon. I wrote at the last moment :)
Enjoyed your post as always.
hay Mridula, u are finding them funny now. but do you find them funny at that time as well (when u took the photograph). i am particularly interested to know abt goat and jeep one :)
most probably i would have been irritated in those situation.
Nilesh, good to see you hear after such a long time. About the goats, there was enough space in the bus and they were not really bothering me, so I was OK with it while going to Bharmour. But same thing happened on the return journey in really crowded bus and both the goats and the passengers were hassled, I must say.
The jeep skidding was a bit scary initially, as we didn't know what happened for the first few seconds but after that it was not. And the driver was really sorry about it and had to be assured by all of us that it was OK, he was driving well and such things happen sometimes.
Nice ones.. I liked the goats in the bus :)
Do you have images of all those funny sings on Sikkim's roads? If yes why not put up a compilation of them as another post? Will be fun to read.
Nice one Mridula, now its time to call for a contest from your blog :-)
I liked the one of your husband with the bull skull. Even if I had seen something like that, I would never have thought about striking a pose like that.
Arun, no I do not have them :( but I have seen a very good collection of Ladakh ones at Indiamike.
Pooja, would you lift such a skull up in your hands? Hate to admit but I was scared ot it!
I have to say that the sign at the store is the funniest!
The 1st one was LOL!...This is a fun idea and although I am past the deadline, I will try to dig up the funny ones that end up being stashed away in some remote corner of my hard drive...
Thanks fr the laughs..
Hi Mridula,

Rcon, thanks.
Akira and I loved your post on the same subject too.
Rigzin, when I was posting this I was wondering if you would be able to tell us what useless wali means? I mean I do not know till date! You know everyone in the picture? Ah! as I have said before you should blog about Ladakh.
Biby thanks for your kind comment and stopping by.
Hi Mridula
The photographs are excellent specially the one with goats as co-passengers.
Nice, amusing stories, and I agree with Pooja - the funniest photo is that of yout hubby with the skull!!
RE Useless Wali - Hi I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland. I've visited Kovalum in Keralal sevral times in the last 10 years, it makes a fab stopping off place and a chance to move gradually into India time rather than frantic UK time! There is a shop there on the road down to Lighhouse Beach called Useless Wali, the sign looks just like yours! Can't lay my hands on my pic just now, but when I do i'll scan it in and send it to you.
All the best
Sally
the goat pic - i can see how hard -the one standing - is trying to balance :-)
Monts, thank you.
Sigma, and he is normally quite sane person, not much prone to pranks and all!
Sally, and I thought this is a Ladakh phenomenon! I would be quite interested to see your pictures.
Manu, I never thought of th picture from that angle!
This one is a masterpiece. Thanks for posting this!
I've also had a goat as a co-passenger in a bus, but it was hidden under a seat and you can very well imagine my surprise when the conductor announced at a stoppage, "Chalo, bakri waale" and the owner quickly pulled the goat out, made it stand up and led it out on a leash. I was taking a ride on a local bus in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and didn't have a camera with me.
Sidhu, thanks for sharing your story. Goat make for a good travel story I guess.
