I started 'Travel Tales from India' my India Travel Blog quite reluctantly. But it has become an anchor for my writing now. I use this blog to write 'off topic' stuff too. I have two passions, to travel in India (mostly) and then talk about it. My second passion is reading. My India travel blog was once linked at BBC and The Guardian. All my stories published at Gonomad can be viewed from this writer profile page. Interested in more India Travel Blogs?

I don't know whether you know any Tamil, but I think an Indian friend of ours from my childhood in Tamil Nadu used to refer to these as "puttu" (not that they existed in quite this form at the time!) - yet now all I can find under that name is a steamed rice cake from Kerala! Do you think I am dreaming?! I do remember the word bindi as well but that would be normal because I went to school with girls who lived elsewhere in India.
Quaminante, I do not know Tamil but husband does, so let me ask him. And I do think puttu means rice but let me ask him!
So you studied in school in India? Do you know any Hindi? Just curious.
Yes, Puttu means dot (a.k.a. Bindi) in Tamil. Puttu = rice ?? Which language?
In Tamil, rice = saadam
Funny you mention bindis Mridula. The last time I visited India I decided to pick some up for myself and was amazed at how their prices have sky rocketted. I even saw one that was Rs. 500 a piece. Wow !
Frankly I have always liked the plain maroon bindi the best.
Thanks so much cuckoo! Apparently puttu is a type of steamed rice cake in Kerala so I presume that is Malayalam.
Mridula, I was in India for 6 years on and off till age 14, I spoke "bazaar Tamil" at the time (all forgotten, alas), but picked up only a few phrases in Hindi from girls at school who lived in other parts of India. Learning it is on my "to do one day" list...! I have a (BBC) book and tapes, but unfortunately the knowledge doesn't seem to seep off my bookshelves and into my brain, as it ought to.
Hmm, that shows how bad my Tamil is!
