Ayudha Pooja in Bangalore
I was in Bangalore just before the Dusshera festival. On the 9th (or is it the 8th day?) I saw many vehicles decorated with banana leaves and flowers.
I was quite surprised as I have not seen something on this scale in North India . I was told this is called Ayudha Pooja where people worship their means of living. I found the way of celebration quite interesting.
Then the other day we were going to a place through quite narrow by lanes, when we came across this procession. My brother-in-law was driving the car and we had to pull aside. I immediately got down and started clicking pictures.

Try going to Mysore next time..its bigger than this... with the Palace bathed in lights for the whole week...
and ya wish for that SLR tooo... costs around Rs 60000 for a good one!!
Yeah, Mysore is quite an interesting place to visit, specially the palace. Go with your camera fully charged. :) Plenty of paintings inside to see. Plus the flooring. It's fascinating. Don't forget the Vrindavan Gardens and the dam also.
Regarding Puja, it's same as we do in north on ashtami/navami with worshipping our tools, books, scissors, knives, mirror etc. (actually means of living).
Well, I found the interiors and paintings of palaces in Rajasthan more appealing than the ones in Mysore...
Here they have more of art - the use of vibrant colors and all but up in north e.g in Udapiur, the paintings tell u a story..about courage and bravery
P.S: may be the ones in Mysore also tell stories But i didnt understand much..:)
Sid, I have been to Mysore only once, long back in 1993. Next time when I am in B'lore will definitely try.
Cuckoo, thanks for the Mysore tips. I know about the pooja but I have never seen banana leaves and flowers on vehicles here, or is it that I simply failed to observe?
Sid, Rajasthan in also on agenda and if every thing goes as planned then maybe in 2007 Januray I may end up there.
Lovely vibrant colors in your pics. You do manage to record most interesting moments :-).
As you said, banana leaves decorating vehicles is a very unexpected sight.
Yeah like sid mentioned, Mysore is definitely worth visiting.
And if you are in Mysore for a few days, do make it a point to visit BR Hills. This place is just about 70 km from Mysore. There's a tiny temple at the top plus the drive and surroundings are amazing.
Its not just 2 wheelers or 4 wheelers.. on my way to office I saw a train decorated with flowers :)
Thanks for the comment Sigma.
Deepak, I have already started bugging Sesha that I want to go to Mysore the next time we are going South.
Prashanth, and where was your camera then?
