Connaught Place or Rajeev Chowk: What is there in a Name?
I hate going out on a Sunday particularly when I had a working Saturday. But this time our dear friends were in Delhi just for a day and we decided to meet them in CP. H always manages not to drive, so I did all the driving too.
While we were waiting for them near Regal, I as usual started clicking pictures. After a heavy dose of malls, it feels nice to stand out in the open. I parked my car quite near the Madras Coffee house.

This was some cheesy movie, running four shows in Regal. People gave me quite some glances while I was clicking this snap.

When in India, you will find some sings promising a spiritual journey, frankly I am quite skeptical.

This lady was spreading here stuff quite next to the Regal Cinema and clicked her picture from quite some distance.

We finally had lunch in Quality and the pigeon you can see at the top is real.
I will be doing a part II soon, I have many more snaps from the area.

Really enjoying the pictures. India seems as commercial as the U.S. The people w/something to sell attracting the eye w/their bright & shiny objects.
India is getting more and more commercialized, no doubt about it. But along with the swank shops, we do have a lot of sidewalk businessmen and women as of now.
We have less & less small business here. Huge conglomerates like Wal-mart come into a small city & undercut small mom & pop stores, & also smaller hardware & grocery chains.
Looking forward to more pictures.
Those movie posters look as if they are advertising a porn flick! ;-) As far as the previous comment, I think Americans like consistency and that's why we adore our fast food places and huge national chain retailers like Wal-Mart. The nearest Wal-Mart to me is about 20miles away I believe, and I plan to head out there because there are things that I need to buy cheaply for my trip and I don't have the time to search at 10 different places. I don't like the business practices of Wal-Mart (they don't share profits with employees or offer them decent benefits), but ultimately I like their wide variety of items and very low prices. Commercialism is often bashed but people secretly enjoy that!
I like the pictue of the cell phone and ties. I would never have thought to take a picture of those items, but it seemed to capture regular life. I need to remember to take more pictures like that when I'm out traveling.
Commercialism should be bashed at every opprotunity. It's about advertising telling us how, bored, hungry, unpopular, dissatified or ugly we are, untill we spend more $ on crap we don't need.
L>T, I agree that most of the time advertising is telling us to spend some money on soe stupid product that we really don't need!
Crystal, for Indian movies many a times all the stuff to be seen is on the posters! Wal-Mart, as of now is not in India but let us see how long before they come and what happens then. Whatever I read about their business practices I too do not like.
TT, in India road side stalls have been there since ages but the swank shops are relatively new. Side by side they present an interesting contrast. So I keep clicking both!
L>T, thanks for the lively comments.
