What the Hell!

According to this BBC Story a six year old girl is being charged with criminal activity by the police in Ara, Bihar.

The girl has been charged by the police in the northern Indian state of Bihar with attacking them and helping her father escape from police custody.

This is despite the fact that under Indian law, the police cannot file a criminal case against a child below seven years of age.

"When the police lodged the case, they claimed Rani was 10 years old, when she was actually four years old. How could a four-year-old girl have attacked three policemen and freed me?" asks a distraught Bir Bahadur Pandey, the girl's father.

Oh! why do I try to read news the first thing in the morning?

I can’t believe that a criminal case can be filed against a seven year old, let alone a four year old. It’s just shocking to me that the police could get away with claiming a four year old successfully attacked them.

But even if she did attack them, so what? She’s just a child. We can’t hold children accountable in the same way we’d hold adults accountable.

It isn't right, and, like you, it depresses the hell out of me.

good question. i asked myself this very question three years ago and decided not to subscribe to any newspaper.. i used to read half a dozen newspapers every day..now i catch my news on tv where it's converted into entertainment or read it on the net... as rarely as possible. other info that i need.. the net is good enough for that too.

one more incident i remember from that same state police... they have even produced an entire family, including 'kids' under SC/ST atrocity act on a false charge... i remember the judge, a bit different to what we usually see, has rebuked the police and freed the kids.

Thank you all for your comments. The worst part is the feeling of helplessness that such news items generate in me.
