Video Cameras in the Staff Rooms of a College?
I used to work in an engineering college, teaching compulsory Economics and Management papers. I have ranted before about it:
This place did not have a decent internet connection, they had no money to give a PC to their faculty members, they had no money to put AC in every staff room but they have the money to put the video cameras in faculty rooms. And I thought academics is one of the most liberal professions in the world.
I fail to understand why anyone would like to monitor their faculty members through video cameras. It makes no sense and leaves me horrified. I am so glad I left that job before all this happened.
They once held a meeting of the so called research committee, where the director (retired IIT Delhi faculty) asked us to do research. I asked them if they are willing to provide me a PC, as after teaching 20 classes a week, I need a PC on my desk rather than running to the common lab where the computers take 20 minutes to boot. They agreed in the meeting probably to save face. But later the so called dean (retired IIT KGP faculty) called me to his office, and told me that a computer costs 40,000 rupees and do I even knew to open and close a computer and asked me to demonstrate 'how to close a window' on his 1988 model laptop!Though I left that job in April 2005, I am still in touch with a few colleagues and students there. A few days back a student wrote to me saying the management has placed video cameras in the staff rooms and corridoors of the institute! I was quite taken aback. I thought I will ask a faculty friend. And to my horror she said they have placed video cameras inside each and every staff room! Can you imagine?

I don't like the turn of things with the world becoming so "Big Brother-like", and in the subway systems and major cities all across the U.S. & Europe video cameras are everywhere. You can't move 10 metres without being photographed at least a half dozen times, and it's quite creepy knowing you live under constant surveillance. What an invasion of privacy to have cameras even in the faculty offices!
I would be upset too if that happened at our school. Sometimes I think people are so mixed up in the head...especially when it comes to education. Teachers are out there to truly help the students and sometimes I think everything else is being done then what is ultimately the most benefical!
It worries me too. Looks like academics isn't as rosy as it seemed.
how can they do that....why I am asking this they already did it. Remember that old king who started 'leather coins' and moved his capital from one place to another....
Crystal, here where cameras are needed, we will probably not find one and they will put it just like that in faculty staff room! I shudder to imagine what the atmosphere will be like.
TT, "Sometimes I think people are so mixed up in the head...especially when it comes to education." This statement is so apt for so many places in India as of now. I can only hope that things will change.
Anirudh, I guess I worked at a lot of wrong places!
Tarun, that kings example is so apt to this situation. People can be so short shighted.
this is funny..back when i was in 12th, there was a tuition teacher who used to have CCTV in his classroom so that he could see if the students were up to any mischief while he was away. wonder what do they gain by installing cams in staffrooms though..
That's outright disgusting!! It seems when people have money and don't know what to do with it, then such wierd ideas are generated.
Why don't they just put telescreens in all the rooms like in George Orwell's "1984" and truly admit that they are acting like a totalitarian regime?
Thank god you made it out of there, Mridula!
Almost five years back, Mata Sundri College in Delhi installed CCTV cameras in their staff rooms and corridors. I'd met the principal, and she didn't seem to find anything strange about it. Mind you, this is a rather nondescript DU college in ITO, not the hotbed of university politics. On top of evrything, it's a girls college -- so unless they were trying to capture some lesbian sex before the age of MMS, I couldn't find a single reason for this.
Poison, Alka and JB, thanks a lot for your comments. JB I am really glad I came out of that place and landed someplace decent.
TMM, thanks for sharing this. Do they still continue with this practice?
hi mridula!
i was amazed with this beautiful template!! ^^
monitoring cameras are quite obnoxious! not in faculty room lol
crimes in the schools are increasing tho.
the other day, a teacher killed his student instantly. he turned the camera off before killing her.
so nobody noticed that until he called the police from his mobile phone. wat is the use of cameras!?
i think it was a good decision of u to leave there! ^^
Niki, yes, I too love my new template and all thanks to Saurav.
You cannot imagine how happy I am to leave that wretched place behind!
