Do Not Try to Drive me Away from Desipundit Vulturo

Heck, I am upset. Look at this post at Desipundit. I was the first person to leave a comment there. Like a fool I did not back up my comment, even though my brother-in-law asked me to take a back-up and link it to my blog. I thought there was no need to do so. After me Anirudh left a comment and both are gone now. I am reproducing my comment from memory and no, it had no curse words, I do not use curse words in the public domain.

I wrote “This is biased moderation and the moderator is letting his views on the subject affect it. … Since when did DP start linking to people’s comments at other posts?”

This is all I can recall in good faith. I wrote one more line but I cannot recall what. I hope Anirudh too will let us know what he wrote. Anyway, you can still see how Sibyl reacted to the removal of the comments.

Well, Shivam, it was very funny.

On a different issue, just surprised to see that the two comments posted before mine have been deleted. Curious, considering they weren’t rude or anything, they just suggested that the tone of the post was a bit biased. Oh, well…

Now Vulturo (the moderator of the post) tells Anirudh and me:

The comments were deleted as they were found to be in a bad taste, and against the spirit of DesiPundit. Thank you.

I have been called belligerent before for my comments but I have never accused of bad taste or being against the spirit of Desipundit.

You see I like the site so much and believed it is doing good work that I answered their called for donation (though the amount I contributed is very small when converted in dollars and anyway at that point of time I wanted to contribute).

Do not take that belief away from me over a debate Vulturo. I do call your moderation biased. Is that in bad taste and against the spirit of desipundit? Are you Desipundit?

At this point of time I am very evenly poised and do not know where I go from here as far as Desipundit is concerned.

PS. I giving this as a hat tip to Desipundit, let me see if I get a response. And I have definitely backed up the comments now available at Desipundit.

PPS. Anirudh writes about the same here.

Mridula, I agree. The least intervened systems are the most orderly ones

Anirudh, Desipundit in all fairness linked to my post.

Satya, I have no problem with moderation if it is done with the intention of fairness and anyway it is DP's space. I am fond of the way they do their moderation apart from this one incident. I am in no way arguing for doing away with moderation on DP, all I am complaining against is the way my comments were taken off in this instance and the explanation offered. If they can justify that taking away my comments was the best thing on the site, I willing to give it a patient hearing as they are giving to me.

I have had comments not appear at all on Desipundit and other sites in India I have in my blogroll, with the only offense I can find being my whiteness and anglo name, so there's that for what it's worth.

David, if the choice is between 'no comments' or 'moderated comments' I would pick up moderated comments anyday.

In gerenal, I do not have a problem the way comments are moderated at Desipundit and I am repeating myself, in all fairness they linked to my rant on the site itself. At least, they are willing to listen. If you feel strongly enough, take it up with them.

I don't even remember who's post it was at Desi that my comment never appeared on....and don't take me wrong, I fully support the owners of any website moderating it however they want.

I just have had the same thing happen in other parts of the Indian blogosphere, and I'm very much in favor of stronger ties between India and America.

And in all instances nothing I was saying was much different in tone or language than anything else anyone was saying, except having an Anglo name.

I've been online over 20 years, and can spot discrimination when I see it, that's all.

But hey, knock yourselves out, we can go and by Chinese shit forever if y'all'd rather. :-)

David, I am not sure I remember your comment but I can assure you that you haven't been discriminated against. We actually encourage non-desis on DesiPundit so the vanishing comment might be an accident, technical glitch, or mistaken as spam. Email me and we can sort it out.

I have no problem with people moderating comments or disallowing them at all. But for the life of me I cannot figure out why Vulturo and Desipundit would delete yours and Anirudh's comments. Patrix/Vulturo, any thoughts to offer on that score?

It was weeks and weeks ago, and don't worry, I still read DesiPundit and have them on my blogroll. And it only happened there once.

It's just not the only desi blog I have had comments disappear on.

That's the kind of shit I expect from the Chinese, is all.

And moderation systems where the comment appears only after approval tend to have much shorter discussions that when they are deleted later. Less controversy, but less conversation.

I'm just observing a pattern I've experienced in the DesiSphere, if you will.

And it turns me off. And I'm a Hindi-phile. (is there a better english equivalent for that?)

Cheers,

-David

Dilip,

All I can say is that deleting Mridula and Anirudh's comments were a mistake and hopefully will not be repeated again. Flaming on blogs can certainly reach undesirable consequences and hopefully responsible bloggers keep away from doing so is all I can say.

David,
Let me know if your comments are still blocked. If they are, send me your email id or IP address. I'll try to unblock you but I can assure you that you weren't discriminated against because of being white.

Thanks for acknowledging the mistake. That was indeed commendable. I think we all can empathise with the intention of being wary regarding comments. Given a blog that is as popular and has as diverse a readership as Desipundit, some comments may indeed be problematic and we understand that. The dispute was about this particular decision and I think you did well by stating that this wont be repeated. Thanks.

Patrix, thanks a lot for your comments. From my side, the issue is closed.

Patrix, thanx, I'll certainly do that if a comment there doesn't show up in the future!

One small piece of Netiquette for any blog owners reading this: if your comments do not show up until moderator(s) approve them, it's considered polite to put some small notice there to that effect. And if your software supports it, give immediate feedback to posters who's IP address is (perhaps unintentionally) blocked! I couldn't tell if the instance on DesiPundit in the past I was referring to above was because of a moderation policy that required all comments to be approved, and mine was offensive in some way, or if it just went into a black hole because my whole IP block (I'm on a large US ISP) was blacklisted.

Very disconcerting to not even know which case was possible! :-)

Cheers,

-David
