Attendence or Not?
I got to know about this from Anirudh. His friend Vinod is not happy at all about his grades that he got after scoring maximum marks in his class in a particular subject at IIT Kanpur (Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur). He got a D.
I wonder, I know of many places where attendence is a criteria for how much you can score. For example IIMB and IIML both have attendence norms to my knowledge. Last known to me, IITK didn't. I guess the rule of the games should be clear from the beginning whether there is going to be an attendence norm or not, and not made up at the end of the semester.
PS. Vinod says the rule of the games were clear from the beginning but he is not happy with the attendence rules. I wonder what happens in other countries. Do undergrad students have to fulfil attendence requirements?
Okay, cribbing time. For the first time during my stay at IITK, I have become the victim of the tyranny of professors. There is one particular course – Environmental Engineering – in which I scored a “batch max” i.e. maximum marks in the class – in the end semester examination and was awarded a D grade. Why? Because I did not attend his (...) classes.

This is the second time I have been told so.I will definitely post about travel tomorrow. Thanks a lot for your comment.
The rules were clear from the beginning and I'm not entirely innocent. I just want to say that the rule was plain stupid.
Thanks for this new input Vinod. So we have formal attendence norms at IITK?
IITK fortunately doesn't have formal attendance norms yet. It depends on the professor. Of course, this can be viewed from a variety of angles as bunking is becoming a big problem in schools and colleges and perhaps Vinod did not deserve an A. But a D? It seems likes going too far.
Btw, you've got the link to my blog wrong on your blogroll.

No there are no formal attendance norms at the institute level. Hoever there is an increasing pressure on the professors to enforce attendance in class. Three out of six courses that I'm doing this sem have compulsory attendance and even others enforce attendance through rules like "at least five surprise quizzes". The rules enforcing attendance are plain stupid. They are like treating the symptoms and not the cause. Making attendance compulsory is not going to make me study. What is needed is that the profs pay a little more attension towards teaching. Putting effort to make classes interesting isn't such a bad idea. What do you do if I attend your classes and still sleep (if not physically then mentally)? Professors need to grow up a little bit.
