You still Go to Jail, Even if You Have Nobel Prize in Physics
“A Nobel Prize-winning physicist has been sentenced to two years in prison for killing a man and injuring seven other people while going more than 161 kph in his sports car.
John Robert Schrieffer, 74, a Florida State University professor who taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara until 1991, had nine prior speeding tickets and was driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash last year. His attorney said the scientist fell asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz.”
…
The judge said:
"I think you need a taste of state prison," Herman said at the time. "The tragedy of this case is that you're a bright man who has made great contributions to society. ... It's a puzzle why you decided to drive high-performance cars at great speeds on public highways."
The whole story can be found here
Rings any familiar bells? Does our Bollywood icon ‘Salman Khan’ comes to the mind? He ran over his car over people sleeping on pavements in Mumbai and killing one, and yet on FM radio we hear that he is a ‘hero’ that can draw crowd to the movie theatre. Yahan saab kuch chalta hai?

you are right, in india, celebrities get away with murder, literally, even second-rung ones like siddhu!
i was also happy to see anjum chopra, she has come on tv earlier but only on talk shows etc.
You are right. The Khan PR department is now in full swing. You can see him smiling at all the right places at right time.He possesses all the ingradient of "good life", then why should we waste our breath on morality? Fame and good bank balance. that's all. We can't see anything beyond this.
True and bad. No words to say yaar. Somehow the reel-life heroes enjoy much more than the real-life ones.
I was quite happy to read that sunit shetty and sanjay dutt's cars were taken away from them.
Oh, this is sad. However, I wonder if the Nobel Prize winning Scientist were instead famous for being a movie star or famous model or sports person, would he have gotten the same time in prison? Just like your bollywood star, our hollywood stars get preferential treatment here, too. They are always getting "out of jail free" for their bad behavior!
Well that dude just has a Nobel.
Our salman has an "Ig Nobel"
Gulnaz, Alka and Ritesh, all very valid poins.
Mo, I had an inkling because of the stories you get read, but it provides little comfort that we Indians are not alone in this.
Arzan, thanks for that link. I was not aware of the existence of the Ig Nobel!
Yeah..you right,Mridula..In India..everything is possible for celebrities and high profile politicians...
And Russel Crowe of Gladiator was arrested within a couple of hours as he manhandled one Hotel receptionist...
But we hardly find these type of cases in India..
Celebrities should not be immune to punishment for their crimes, and that's sad if it's really true what Gulnaz says above.
what can i say...crime deserves punishment, celebrity or not.otherwise the whole fabric of justice comes under suspicion..
Ganga, now that you mention it, I do remember the Russel Crowe episode.
Crystal, what Gulnaz says is largely ture but the judiciary in India has taken many tough and excellent decisions too.
Agreed Poison, agreed.
