What does the Net say about Amity Business School?
Indian blogsphere is hot at the moment and I feel the time is right to write about another business school that makes tall claims but one has just to dig a little deeper. I am talking about
Why did I decide to do so?
According to the police, the incident came to light when parents of Harsh Khatri, a resident of Farsh Bazar, woke up this morning and found him hanging from the ceiling. Subsequently, the police were informed. A suicide note was also recovered from the spot.
In the note, Harsh purportedly wrote that he had appeared in a particular examination in the first semester but a teacher marked him absent for unexplained reasons. Later, he applied for re-checking of records.

Today (11 October, 2005) I was watching 9.00 news at S1 News and they showed Harsh’s parents and that the police has not yet registered a FIR in this case. That really got me. So here I go.
They make all sorts of claims from their website http://amity.edu/
Amity University has been ranked No. 1 private university in India. (Source: Education Times).

But what does Government of India website has to say about them? Well here it is.
The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to withdraw approval for conduct of PGDM (full time) and PGDM (part time) courses to Amity Business School Noida, from the academic year 2005-06. Consequent upon withdrawal of AICTE approval, the Council decided to transfer and distribute the students already admitted in the
The decision has been taken after the Expert Committees of AICTE visited Amity Business School of Noida on several occasions during the last few years and show cause notices had been issued for violating norms and standards set by the Council. Expert Committees visited

Why are mainstream newspapers so low key about all this? Well, it is advertising once again.
With increasing competition, educational institutions would apply all the marketing principles; the advertising we will see will be more focused on addressing the needs of the students.
The shift is already evident. A few institutions like IIPM, ISB, Amity International,

What say you? Next time you come here via a google search, ponder for a moment why you do not see this being discussed in the newspapers and why no news channels are breaking news? Wait for the month of July and see the number of Ads carried by the newspapers and the TV channels.
I also wish to share with you my teaching experiences in the private sector, though I do not mention where did I teach in my posts.

I think education concerns us all -- after all today's institutions create tomorrow's citizens. So it becomes imperative that all institutions of higher educations adhere to at least the basic propriety: that there founders and managers are not fugitives from law, whether it is the law of the land or some foreign agency.
Since the Chauhans are providing "quality" education and "nurturing talent", they should be dealt with on a priority basis because otherwise what sort of value system are the going to inculcate among their students if they themselves don't respect the law?
Sadly, the politicians and the administrators who are supposed to bring such people to book are themselves ten times more corrupt. Fortunately, platforms, such as this one, are taking up the cudgels.

It's so sad that kid killed himself over the disputed absence! Wow! But I guess it's really competitive in India, because there are so many people, so probably he was scared of getting a bad grade but still, that's very very extreme.
it is sad that education in this country is being sold...commercial motives have made the temples of knowledge in to slaughter houses of young minds
sad indeed
uma
It's bad; it's getting really bad; and it's a lot worse than what it seems to be!
This is really shocking.
And I am sure that this is not the only dubious institute in town. When education becomes a business and a revenue generating mechanism, its doomed. There are private institutions that are run well, but they are in the minority.
I know, it is shocking. And the beauty is that all this is already on the net.
This thing about Amity was out in the open for quite sometime. Again its the advertising that keeps mainstream media from joining this issue..
What other options one has if not for the blogs.. and why is the govt. sleeping over it!
I have to echo Crystal and say "Wow!" The situation must be unimaginably awful to provoke a student to commit suicide.
I saw a report recently about online universities that turned out to be complete scams. They were offering advanced degrees that turned out to be completely worthless. There were several people who were hired based on their "degrees" and then fired when the degrees turned out to be fake, even though they had been performing their jobs well.
It's just sad when education becomes a for-profit business at the expense of the students.
Sumit, I too had seen it before, but not via a Rajya Sabha Transcript.
Lily, yes, it must have been unbearable for the poor guy and now it must be unbearable for the parents.
So some online universties were a fraud? So sad to here that.
amity is worst of many pvt institutions flourishing in inida
it is only for money
it very wickedly covered the death of 5 students who drowned in goa in august 2003 under the guidance of professor Gurinder Singh
it is very bad at placements still manipulates to show goood records
it has bad faculty still covers up
and backdoor admissions are common here
Thanks for providing additional information here Anonymous.

I was really happy when I got selected for the PGDM course in Amity this year. I was kinda thrilled because Amity always ranked in the top 15-20 B schools in India.Apparently, I had also taken the GMAT and was applying in B schools in the US. Luckily, I got an admit, and I came here. A month after coming to the US, I read about AICTE derecognizing Amity Business School! That was a total shocker.Today, I was just looking for updates on the ABS derecognizing story - and I found your blog by chance. The information you have provided is an absolute shocker!! The Chauhan guy actually looks like a convict, and it seems that he has a six and a half feet tall bodyguard always at his service - I think Chauhan knows that the German govt. is hell bent on kicking his butt, that's why the bodyguard!
I thank God and my lucky stars to have taken me away from the clutches of the so called No. 1 private university in India.
Thanks for all the information Mridula - Good job!
Venkat, thanks a lot for taking time and sharing your thoughts here. I know, we do not get to know the true picture from rankings given by mainstream media. I do not know how they gather their data! So nice that you got away at the right time.
based on MAT score DEC 2004 Amity Business School
Offered us admission in PGDM (AICTE APPROVED) for the
Batch 2005-2007. We have taken admission in the first
Half of the March 2005 and deposited rs 123150 (tuition
fee) , in oriental bank of
comerce AIS Sec. 44 noida. Our course commenced on
27th June 2005 and from the very first day we were
Facing the problem of infrastructure and faculty. At
Times we don't have place in rooms, not even a single
Chair in library, not a single comp. Vacant in comp.
Lab, not even a single book to issue and not even a
Single class for entire batch. AICTE withdrawn its
Approval from the said course after repeated visits &
Warnings from their side to ABS but all of no avail.
They have withdrawn because all the norms settled by
Them for any business school who are running autonomous
PGDM programmers, some norms to adhere for, and ABS
Has violated all of them without any fear of losing
Recognition from AICTE, at the stake of student's
Career, whatever AICTE done ABS deserves that. After
Withdrawal of recognition Mr. A.K.Chauhan (Founder
President of amity group) addressed all the students
Of PGDM of senior as well as junior batch, + Faculty +
Some members from the media. He assured students of
Some concrete action within a week from Amity's side
For quick relief of students, and he also said those
Who wants to withdraw from the course can withdraw
And full fee will be refunded to them. After that
Mental harassment started in the classrooms, faculty
Used to speak very rude in the classes like those who
Wants to quit can quit, we will be very happy with
This. Some of the 2nd yr students who took initiatives
Against management during this crisis. Their mouths
Have been shutted by the warnings of restigation from
Institute & no placements from their side to them.
When there was not even a single action within A MONTH
we are forced to withdraw from the course in view
Of career prospects, which for all of us is of grave
Concern & we just can't wait and watch ruining of our
Careers like this.
They pressurized us not to withdraw from PGDM from
Amity, when we insisted on our stands they said they
Will not refund our fees & whatever u wants to do u
Are free to do. They also said if u wants to transfer in
Any other institute as guided by AICTE u have to get a
Affidavit from that institute that after getting
Admission in that institute WE’ll not say any ill words
About Amity. They also said if u wants to withdraw from
Amity, write application stating that u are
withdrawing because of ur personal reasons not because
of AICTE,which is not possible at all in any
circumstances. They also refused to receive our
Withdrawl applications saying that this is not
Tradition of Amity.
Now we want to address these problems to general
Public through media so that in future no other
Student like us get victimized by these business
Institute
i am a unfortunate student of amity............who want to leave but cant leave amity..as they r not returning our fee......
Anonymous, thanks a lot for writing your comment here. I am so sorry for you and others like you. And the press is going to sleep over it for sure.
ya this is the saddest part of stry, no one is coming forward to save us..........even not our faculty , our director , our ddg , or so called founder president( lala ji) to save us .....who is good for nothing except speaking............lot of harrasment from amity side......lot of fake things abt how case is going on, and how they will get back AICTE as they have mony and power, but in all this they just screw our career...........
I too feel pretty helpless. Have a look at what happened to IIPM.
I wish you all too could anonymously blow this issue up on the net. If anyone of you wish my email address is on my profile page.
may i know the name of anonymus here.......man ur batchmate here..........

Anon I posted about it here.
http://www.gonomad.com/traveltalesfromindia/2006/01/amity-business-school-taken-to.html
I have changed serves hence my new posts are not reflecting here. Thanks for pointing to it anyway.
i dont know if anyone is going to read this....this blog is too old.
anyway, i am a first year student in amity school of engineering, noida and am really tense about the college future. the seniors say not to worry, but considering what has been written by the anonymous guy it is very disturbing that my future is totally in dumps. i mean i now, dont even have time to actually study for entrances and i was thinking of continuing here and then doing M.S. from abroad. but what will i do if i dont get a recognized degree.
i was told that the approval will be recieved after 2 months of joining the college but obviously they are good at telling lies
So many anonymous comments on ths post! Even though this blog is old it comes up in searches, hence people do see it and I get a comment on it!
I am a student of Amity Business School. Not in PGDM though, I am doing a MBA program from there. At first I hated Amity.. I wanted to some how or the other leave Amity, but the enormous fees of the college made me stay back. A year into the college and trust me I have started loving it. The teachers have gone better, the hostel is much better the placement scene is improving and interaction with the industry has improved.
All this has happened only because of the shock that Amity got after the withdrawal of the AICTE approval. The MBA that I am pursuing does not need an AICTE approval as its under Amity University.
Anyways all I am saying is that Amity is definitely improving : )
I THINK AMITY UR PROBABLY A SPY 4OM AMITY TELLIN ALL GODDY GODDY STUFF ABT AMITY N ATTRACTING MORE STUDENTS
Well there are diffrent lights to look at the same thing. A student commiting suecide does not prove anything for the simple reason that a person would kill himself of his own free will and if he did not like the collage he could have just left. I am supporting Amity because i have taken addmision over there, I had got into IP univ rank 857 but i knew that if i went for counceling i would be given some third grade collage which would be at par or worst than Amity. I agree you would be really surprised by the decission but Amity Business school on the CV looks much better than guru teg bhadur singh collage or something like that....
OK agreed that Amity charges through the roof butwhat it gives is prices less
Shezadaaa, how do you reconcile to the fact that the owners have interpol arrest warrants in their names?
What about the students who have already passed out of the college??What was AICTE doing earlier? Its all a political game...these guys have played with the future os hundreds of students?I am one of them...
well i'm studying in amity school of engineering..m in my 2nd year...believe me its not that bad...
