Entertainment, Information and Vacation Discounts at the 2009 New York Times Travel Show

GoNOMAD Editors Max Hartshorne and Kent St. John will conduct a workshop on travel writing, based on a highly successful workshop at last year's show.
Back from a trip and want to share what you saw with the world? Hartshorne and St. John will present an overview of the travel writing market for beginning travel writers and provide tips and tricks that will help get your articles published.
They will also teach you how to use social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Myspace to get more exposure for your travel stories on the web.

This year, the Travel Show will move to the Main Hall, located on the south side of the Javits Center. The event will showcase a variety of travel and vacation opportunities for consumers of all types: those traveling solo, as a couple or taking the whole family; those looking for budget or luxury trips; and those looking for relaxation and wellness trips or seeking adventure travel.
The common thread will be the opportunity for consumers to book any type of vacation during the show taking advantage of all the special on-site promotions that provide the most value for their travel investment.
The show features discounts and entertainment for families, singles, couples and seniors, including vacation discounts and travel packages from nearly 500 sponsors and exhibitors. Visitors can take advantage of these on-site-only offers on the Travel Show floor.
Visitors will also enjoy entertainment and special live performances from around the world including dance, musicians and live animals.
They can also watch sneak previews of upcoming episodes on the Travel channel and get travel advice from the stars of their favorite programs including Andrew Zimmern, host of “Bizarre Foods” and Samantha Brown, host of “Passport to Great Weekends.”
Doug Duda, A&E International Network’s “The Well-Seasoned Traveler,” will host international food and wine tastings and tips for the culinary traveler. Star chefs, writers, sommeliers, wine makers and culinary guides take the audience on a delicious journey, featuring demonstrations and samples of their favorite food and drink adventures. This year, visitors will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with our presenters and enjoy a taste of their travels.
The Luxury/Spa Pavilion will present exhibitors from spa resorts around the globe with on-site treatments and exclusive discounts and packages for visitors to the Travel Show.
“Wild Survivors” is presented by SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove. Exotic animals from around the globe take center stage as the SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove parks present “Wild Survivors.”
Animal Ambassadors share important and entertaining conservation information and introduce a variety of furry, feathered and fanged creatures including penguins, a sloth, snake, lemur, toucan and alligator.
The show will also feature travel seminars with the experts. Want to learn about the hottest vacation spots? What are the best international vacation spots for family travel? What makes for the most exciting and affordable weekend getaways?
These are just some of the topics that will be covered in more than 25 consumer seminars held throughout the weekend.
Speakers will include Mark Bittman, New York Times columnist, author of “Food Matters” and co-host of the Public Television show “Spain... On the Road Again”; Arthur and Pauline Frommer; Rick Steves; “1000 Places To See Before You Die” author Patricia Schultz; and PBS Travelscope’s Joseph Rosendo.
Travel experts including Rick Steves, Arthur and Pauline Frommer, Stephanie Abrams and experts from the Travel Channel, including Andrew Zimmern and Samantha Brown, will take questions and offer tips in on-site seminars.
Visitors can also get travel shopping tips from Radio Host Stephanie Abrams. Learn where the best places are to find the products you love, from leather to linens, to porcelain to sapphires.
Stephanie will teach you how to save enough money on your shopping to help you to pay for your travel and hotel expenses. Abrams will also offer a special presentation focused on visits to the historic castles, abbeys, homes and hidden treasures of Ireland.
Learn to Dive
They can also learn to scuba dive in an 18x30-foot, 18,000-gallon heated dive pool on the floor of the Travel Show. Families, couples and people of every age will be introduced to scuba diving by certified diving instructors. All equipment, towels, mirrors and hair dryers are provided onsite. The 'Be A Diver Pool' is a Diving & Equipment Marketing Association (DEMA) program.
Borders will host an on-site bookstore where you can purchase many of the latest travel guides, meet authors, ask for travel advice or get an autographed book from your favorite travel writer.
The New York Times Travel Show is the largest consumer and trade travel event of its kind in the United States featuring different regions of the world including Africa, Asia, Australia / South Pacific, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, Mexico, South America and the United States.

Trade Day for Professionals
The 2009 Travel Show will launch with a Trade Day for industry professionals on Feb. 6, offering seminars, workshops and a preview of the show floor, followed by an industry reception on the floor sponsored by The Brazilian Tourist Board.
New for Trade Day will be a targeted conference called Focus On Africa. Sponsored by APTA, this Conference & targeted exhibition focuses on the selling and promotion of tours to Africa and is expected to draw hundreds of travel professionals.
Trade Day is supported by leaders of the travel industry, including the American Society of Travel Agents and Performance Media Group, producers of travelpulse, Agent@Home and Vacation Agent Magazines.
Admission to the show is $15, with a $5 discount if tickets are purchased with an American Express Card. Children under 18 are admitted free.
