I had the chance to spend the day at Hotel Buckminster in Boston, Massachusetts.

The holidays were wrapping up and I was exhausted. It had been two weeks of holiday bustle during the double shifts at work, trying to complete finals at college, and driving to far away family. I wanted a day off that differed from the normal routine. However on a student budget my choices were very limited. Until I found Hotels-By-Day.

How it Works

Hotels-By-Day is exactly what it sounds like. It is a service where one can book a hotel room for the few hours the rooms are vacant between check-ins.

Hotels-By-Day is simple to use. First, one picks the hotel and location where they wish to stay. There are hotels in the program all over the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The company is aiming to be global in the next year.

One can book a location on the website, IOS, or Android Application. There is no charge to book the hotel.  The website also lets one choose if they are picking a room for a quick day get away or for business purposes.

The hotels listed on the site are rarely under three stars, unless past guests have given excellent reviews and the hotel is independent. Guests will not pay over $150 for the day. Bookings need to be made with a credit card, however the card will not be charged until arriving at the hotel. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the stay.

Dayuse.com

Dayuse.com is a similar, Paris-based company that has recently recieved 15 million in funding for a similar function. In countries where day use for hotel rooms is perceived less as taboo, it is no wonder why the business thrives greater in a European context. What seperates Dayuse is their willigness to compete with collaborative economy members like Airbnb and HomeAway by offering complimentary overnight stays under many circumstances. Over 300 thousand users across the globe have found a new trust in hotels thanks to Dayuse. Co-founder Paul Dubrule perfectly summarizes the advantage of Dayuse as the opportunity for “a complementary revenue stream” for hoteliers.

Spas, Pools and More

After the booking is made, guests simply show up to the hotel and make the day their own. Many hotels offer spas, pools, or other daytime activities. Guests can enjoy these amenities without paying the full overnight prices.

Hotels-By-Day is often used by travelers with long lay-overs. This gives one a chance to freshen up after a long flight, enjoy the city where one has to spend a few hours during a layover, do some work using hotel wi-fi, and to relax before continuing on with travels.

The majority of users, however, are traveling for the day for business. The hotel room allows them to have a place to go in between meetings and to store their personal items for the day. Businesses can also can book conference rooms at hotels with Hotels-By-Day.

In the Heart of Boston

I had the chance to stay at the Hotel Buckminster, right in the heart of Kenmore Square in Boston, Massachusetts. I lived in Boston for a few years and was excited to have a reason to spend the day there.

Hotel Buckminster is not only in a great location, but the hotel embodies the Boston persona which is the historical era being mixed with the modern. The windows in the hotel rooms overlook the bustling streets and offer everything a guest would need to be comfortable.

After dropping of our things and sleeping off the holiday bustle for a bit, we stepped out into Kenmore Square. It is located right by the campus of Boston University. The streets were bustling with honking cars, buses, and students darting across the street to Starbucks.

Restaurants line the streets ranging from McDonalds, to underground restaurants, to high class dining. Shops range from chains to locally owned underground record stores whose contents spill out onto the sidewalk.

For those who have never traveled to Boston, Kenmore Square is an excellent place to spend the day to get a feel for the city whose citizens are so proud to call home.

Taking the T

The T stop is only about a five minute walk from the hotel giving guests even more access to the city.

After walking around for a couple hours we settled on eating at the Yardhouse, a restaurant famous for its 1.5ft beer glasses and for excellent food.

We walked around after lunch and taking in the bustle of the streets and of Fenway Park. There are many small pubs and shops in that area so we enjoyed a few more pints and some window shopping.

We then headed back to the hotel and had a little while to relax before checking out and driving home.

So whether you are looking for a place to relax in between meetings, a place to nap before getting on another long flight, or if you are like myself and just want a day to yourself that is different from the normal routine, then Hotels-By-Day offers a small vacation either in faraway places or in places we call home.
