A Night at the Ballet in Georgia

A grandmother and her granddaughters at the ballet
A grandmother and her granddaughters at
the ballet in Tblisi

"I expected to find Tbilisi's elegant Edwardian-era opera house virtually empty; but was astonished to find it packed to its ornate rafters with hundreds of preteen girls and their doting adoring grandmothers.

"For two full hours, the youngsters sat in silent spellbound attention as beautiful ballerinas bathed in a pale blue light pirouetted past them. The little girls' eyes glowed with unadulterated awe. Then, at the grand finale, the little girls leaped up, almost as one, and seemed to rock the building with their thunderous applause."

We think you'll really enjoy Steven Knipp's story on the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, now an independent nation. Steven is a real professional and a seasoned traveler, and it shows in his debut with GoNOMAD.

We also have Editor Max Hartshorne reporting from Medellin, Colombia, where an era of fear has ended and a new era of hope has begun. That's exciting. Cindy Bigras has a wonderful story about Bologna: the storied history, the museums and concert halls, the basilicas and other architectural marvels, the splendid cuisine, and above all the spirit of hospitality.

In our Family Travel Section, we introduce two excellent new writers, Kate Cosme of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, and Moumita Deb of Mumbai, India, who write about vacations that are fun for the whole family, Moumita in China and Kate in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

Lisa Lubin and Darrin Duford both make their second appearance on the site, Lisa with a piece on bicycling in Vietnam and Darrin with a visit to a market town in Ecuador. Associate Editor Stephen Hartshorne reports on fine art and family fun in Rockland, Maine, Marika Hill gives us the lowdown on how to ride a camel and avoid venomous snakes in India's Thar Desert and Will Seigler hunts for dinosaur bones in Colorado's Dinosaur National Park.

Just another month of top-notch travel writing on GoNOMAD.com.

Children playing in Medellin, Colombia Medellin, Colombia: A City Once Full of Fear, Now Full of Hope
Max Hartshorne recently returned from a trip to Medellin, Colombia, where he found a city that was once the world's most dangerous had been transformed into a liveable, hope-filled place with a bright future. Here are some of the daily blogs that chronicled the places he went and the Colombians he spoke with during the trip.

Riding a stone elephant at the Beijing Zoo

China: A Wonderful Family Destination
"Oh Mamma, are we really going to see Pandas?" asked my six-year-old son, Soham, goggle-eyed with excitement, as we discussed our vacation to China with our two children. For both our children, China was synonymous with cuddly Pandas and the Great Wall, and they couldn't wait to see both. I planned on visiting places which would appeal to everyone in our family and finalized our stays at Shanghai, Beijing, Xian and Guilin...

A girl in the former Soviet republic of Georgia Georgia: Days of Wine and Roses
As the first country to break free from Russian control after the USSR collapsed in 1991, Georgia is today a vibrant young nation -- even its American-educated president is just 38. But this is also a land born of an ancient womb. For 2,000 years Georgia was an independent kingdom. Its language has no known links to any other tongue, and even its strange curlicue alphabet is absolutely unique...

Learning to ride a camel in India The Beginner's Guide to Camel Trekking and Venomous Snakes
The last thing you want to see on an overnight camel safari is a six-foot (2m) long, highly poisonous cobra slithering in front of your camel, especially if you will be spending the night under the stars with only a warm sleeping-bag separating you and the desert sand. A group of five of us had decided to do an overnight camel safari in the Thar desert, within the state of Rajasthan, India...

A pig and a sheep at a market in Ecuador Beyond a Shadow of a Snout: A Saturday in Otavalo, Ecuador
The Andean town of Otavalo, Ecuador, was the first place that allowed me to navigate by sound. I first heard a trickle of fearful shrieks bouncing down the street. Then a savage grunt. I found this unsettling, but reassuring. The auditory beacons assured me that I was walking in the right direction to reach Otavalo's early morning animal market, just off the Pan-American Highway...

Riding in Montana Becoming Part of a Ranch Family in Montana
As we drove the long dirt road a mile or so from the Skelton Angus Ranch sign, the road suddenly disappears over a crest. Down below, nestled in a hollow, sits the ranch, with the barns, rusty equipment, the small main house, scattered outbuildings laid out before us. In the distance the yellow hills stretch out forever, and the massive Rockies loom like sentinels.

A painting in the parlor of the Farnsworth Homestead in Rockland, Maine Rockland, Maine: Fine Art and Family Fun
My friend George and I recently took a trip on the quintessential American highway, US 1, to Rockland, Maine, "Rock City, USA," on Penobscot Bay, where we found more opportunities for fun than you could shake a stick at.
We went out and pulled traps with a lobsterman and found out all about the life cycle of the world's favorite crustacean. We gawked at World War I biplanes at the Owl's Head Transportation Museum -- real Fokkers and Sopwiths that still fly....

The statue of Christ the Redeemer in Buenos Aires The World Has Seven New Wonders
For those who missed all the hoopla in the media, a new list has been compiled of the Seven Wonders of the (modern) World taking the place of the Seven Wonders of the (ancient) World.
The new seven wonders, chosen by a worldwide referendum, are the Great Wall of China, the City of Petra in Jordan, the Colosseum in Rome, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Chiten Itza in Mexico, and the Taj Mahal in India..

A dinosaur replica in Dinosaur National Park in Colorado Discovering Bones in Dinosaur National Park
My 12-year-son yelps with delight about ten feet up the trail. I almost lose my footing which would send me careening down a steep hill. When I catch up to him he has both hands on a huge four-foot-long femur previously owned by a dinosaur 150 million years ago. There are few things to light up your young explorer like actually putting his hands on a huge bone of a long extinct animal. You can't get that kind of education from a book...

Biking in Vietnam Petal Power: A Women-Only Bike Trip in Vietnam
Originally I was going to name this entry "Pedal Power" since it is about my fourteen-day cycling tour of Vietnam. But when I joined the group and saw that all ten of my co-riders were women, I thought it was appropriate to change the name. But it turned out to be a really interesting and fun group of gals; plus some of these chicks were tough cyclists who would still beat the bike shorts off most men...

Wranglers in Montana Riding in Montana's Mountains at the Triple J Ranch
"Montana is a small town with really long streets," said Sara Walsh, the proprietor of Latigo and Lace, a gift shop and coffee bar overflowing with Montana art and crafts in the tiny hamlet of Augusta. Her phrase succinctly captures the feeling here in this wide open state with less than one million inhabitants over 147,000 square miles. A visiting guest feels comfortable very quickly in this legendary "Big Sky Country" that was novelist John Steinbeck's favorite state...
