Island Hopping in Scotland's Inner Hebrides
Scotland’s west coast is rather like a tray of smashed toffee; the result of millions of years of geological upheaval, and an enthusiastic scouring by sheets of gritty ice. The result is a coastline rent by inlets and sea-lochs, and peppered with uncountable islands.

Tuscan Spa Relieves "Tourist Tension"
I am not a spa person. Where is the art, the architecture, the history? Spas are for people of leisure, not people with an annual vacation. But maybe spas are also for the weary... I was scheduled for a manicure, two massages, and a dawn yoga session on the grounds of a nearby abbey. The peace and harmony promised by the brochure were not an exaggeration.

Portland, Maine: A Stalwart Seafaring City
Portland, Maine, is scruffy, in the most desirable way; no wonder Outside Magazine places it on the 2005 list of the best places to live. Just past the affluent Kennebunkport and south of LL. Beanville (Freeport) lies one of America’s fastest growing revival cities.

Alamos, Mexico: Small-Scale Colonial Charm
Álamos has earned the title of Pueblo Mágico, a distinction bestowed by the government, in part for its colonial architecture and civic pride, and in part for its tourism potential.

Sony's Second Port of Call: Salvador, Brazil
Salvador, Brazil is known as the greatest Afro-Brazilian city, where the music never stops and people rarely sleep. This is especially true during Carnival, usually February through March. It always begins on a Thursday and usually ends the next Wednesday at dawn.

South Africa: A Life-Affirming Welcome in the Townships
Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been on board since Brazil. His presence inspires several of us to visit the impoverished areas of South Africa first. Nothing could be more life affirming than being welcomed to what are referred to as “townships."

Semester At Sea: A Photo Gallery
Videographer Sony Stark is making a documentary about the Semester At Sea Program: 750 students and 15 staff circling the world in 100 days. "My mission includes 6 hours of camera work a day followed by 2 hours of logging tape," she writes. "It's backbreaking work but I'm my own boss, crafting a 2-hour documentary, with 10 countries on the itinerary."

Costa Rica: History, Geography and Pageantry
Costa Rica’s tumultuous history is more geological than political. The country is blanketed by 112 volcanic formations, created eons ago as part of the Pacific Rim of Fire which accounts for 81% of all major earthquakes. The first sizeable settlement was recently unearthed near Turrialba, where an estimated 10,000 people lived around 1000 BC.

Journey to Mars: San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Traveling to the vast and empty north of Chile  is an out-of-this-world experience. With landscapes that seem more Martian than terrestrial, this place is an outsized panorama where the sun beats unmercifully before retreating into a chilly night. The road shimmers and is unendingly flat, in the moonscape desert all around you; San Pedro is the only green patch. It's called the Valley of the Moon.

Renting a car in Europe allows you to see more, do more and have more fun.
And it is not as
expensive as you might think!

Road Trip Magazine: Motorcyle Touring in Comfort, Style and Safety
Gary Dolgoff and Kate Jackson used to just be two friends who shared a common interest in motorcycle touring. While they loved to ride, it was about more than just the road for them. So, when they noticed that there wasn’t a publication catering to their interest, they did something not many people would try; they started their own.

Karelia, Russia: Outdoor Recreation, Healing Waters and Lively Nightlife
The Republic of Karelia is situated in the North West of Russia, just to the east of the Finno-Russian border. Karelia has about 2.5 million acres of national parks and reserves, 63,000 lakes framed with pine woods, numerous healing water sources and many tour operators specializing in active and outdoor travel. Another plus is Petrozavodsk's nightlife.

Entering the Congo: "The Man With the Key is Dead"
said the immigration officer calmly, referring to the padlocks on the gate that barred the border. Our group of nine people in four specially-prepared vehicles was attempting to cross from Gabon into the Republic of Congo via a seldom used and remote border post. In fact, we had learned that tourists hadn’t used this particular border since the Congolese civil war seven years ago.

The Eurail Selectpass: Riding Trains and Ferries in Ireland and France
Thanks to my Eurail Selectpass, the last eight days have been very eventful: I saw a 360-degree view of Dublin, Ireland and hung upside-down atop an ancient castle. I visited the cultural capital of Europe and got acquainted with nine popes. I gambled away a few Euros while traversing the Atlantic ocean and drank a gin fizz in an open air café in Paris.
