GoNOMAD Internet cafe

The GoNOMAD Cafe is Open!
After months of planning and building, we've opened a brick and mortar version of this website. It's an internet cafe with a travel theme...in downtown South Deerfield, MA.
Many of our neighbors and friends have come in to check it out and sip latte while using our five rental computers. We will be having computer lessons and discussions in the weeks ahead.

The Struggle to Save Mountain Gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Gorilla numbers have drastically diminished as a result of war and lawlessness in game parks in the eastern DRC. It is only in recent years that forest rangers have been allowed to resume work in parts of the reserve and begin assessing the state of the animal population.

Slovenia at 15: Hip, But Unspoiled
It’s got shiny yellow trains and Alps, vineyards and valleys and a capital with diminutive charm. Cloaked in deep forest, it’s a proud little republic with a millennium of peaceful history.

Croatia's Istria Peninsula: Full of Flavor
How does exploring a land of seaside resorts, hilltop villages and great cuisine hit you? It is very possible to do and at a cost around 30% less than the west coast of Italy.
The peninsula of Istria, Croatia lies just across the Adriatic Sea, and people from around the world are rediscovering the incredible land of this part of Croatia.

Hiking to the Base of Mt. Everest
Everest sat high on the near horizon blowing its nose like a blizzard over the top of neighboring Lhotse, the eternal hurricane force winds scouring Everest from its west to east summits. This was the first time I’d seen Everest other than a glimpse from an airplane into Katmandu or Lhasa. This time had taken some doing.

Sunny Cycling in the Dominican Republic
The Northwest’s dark, rainy November is time for southern migrations and sunny adventures. My wife and I winged our way over the Rockies, Great Plains, and Bahamas to land in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Our destination, Playa Cabarete, has ideal beach and water conditions. To our delight, we found that Cabarete also offers cycling, our favorite sport.

A Day in Bangkok's Lumpini Park
Lumpini Park is central Bangkok's largest green lung and occupies 360 rai (58 hectares) of land in Silom. It was donated by Rama VI in 1925 and named after Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal.
It's vibrant place with a lot happening. The main weight area in Lumpini (there are three) has been compared to California's famed Muscle Beach.

Tracking James Joyce in Trieste
It’s a classic James Joyce scene: glittering water, slim boats sliding by a low bridge, bustling crowds, and surveying the scene, the anti-hero who made it all famous. Joyce’s bronze statue slouches near the home where he detonated English literature: not overlooking the Liffey in Dublin, but by the Adriatic, in Trieste, Italy.

Turin, Italy: Regal Grandeur and Bohemian Nightlife
Turin exudes the regal dignity of Italy’s historic royal family, yet boasts the most bohemian nightlife on the peninsula.  Intriguing museums celebrate the art and culture of a city where citizens embrace chocolate and an aperitif as necessity rather than luxury. The reputation as an industrial city belies the treasure troves of art found here.

Restoring Ancient Castles in France
One way to feast on Provence's food and scenery without wrecking your budget or the environment is to volunteer for La Sabranenque, a non-profit organization acclaimed for its restoration work in southern France. La Sabranenque is committed to revitalizing historic villages and preserving traditional, environmentally friendly building techniques.

Renting a car in Europe allows you to see more, do more and have more fun.
And it is not as
expensive as you might think!

Backpacking in Kazakhstan
We had been backpacking through the mountains of Kazakhstan for nearly two days when our horse took off. Not that it was unexpected. The man riding it had been warning us for the last day that he would leave. He had promised to carry our tents to the Kyrgyz border and now he wanted his money. The problem was we were only half way to our destination.

Hobknobbing With Sperm Whales in the Azores
I filled my lungs and swam down. This immediately roused the curiosity of the calf and it turned toward me. In turn, this attracted the attention of one of the smaller whales. Like a watchful older sister reigning in a wandering toddler, it quickly but gently nudged the calf back into close formation with the matriarch.

Chile's Elqui Valley: A Zen Experience in 'Travel Therapy'
Whether you’re seeking unspoiled nature, pristine skies for stargazing, a Zen experience in natural therapies or just a good pisco buzz, the Elqui Valley makes a relaxing and interesting travel destination that’s a bit off the beaten path. One attraction is a reconstructed Incan observatory complete with a stargazing chaise lounge.
