Irish Sheep

The West of Ireland: Stories in Stone
The first thing you notice about the West of Ireland is the predominance of stone in the landscape. There are no trees to speak of, and even the outbuildings are built of stone, yet the countryside is lush and green with a unique mix of Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation.

climber Climbing New York's Shawangunks
Famous for being one of the premiere rock climbing areas in North America, the Shawangunk Ridge offers amazing outdoor recreation opportunities. The perfect climate and breathtaking views attract visitors all across the state and beyond, and for good reason. There are more than one hundred miles of hiking trails.

Nashville Symphony

Renaissance in Music City
Nashville, Tennessee is breaking ground on a musical scene that refuses to be defined by genre, stereotype or demographics, including country. A case in point is the opening of the new $120-million Schermerhorn Symphony Center in the downtown area.

Elephants in Namibia Tracking Elephants in Namibia
Thanks to the Earthwatch Institute, volunteers from around the world come together with professionals to benefit the natural world with their vacation time. This particular expedition works with the elephants of Namibia, intelligent and highly social mammals, who live in the Namib Desert.  Teams of volunteers assist Dr. Keith Leggett in tracking the new elephants, as well as up to a dozen others that have previously been radio-collared.

Kenya

Ecotourism in Kenya's Savannah
Change is happening all around East Africa, but the Maasai tribe have so far been able to pick and chose what they wish to incorporate into their society. They speak of the value of education and they certainly don't mind earning money. There are many Maasai villages that welcome tourists.

Hokkaido, Japan: Crystal Clear Lakes and Smouldering Volcanoes
Having already experienced a sauna of a summer last year in west central Japan, I had no intention of suffering through another. So I assembled a team of experienced road trippers, pack a car full of beer, tents and tunes, and headed north, fleeing the equator, to Hokkaido, the second largest of Japan’s islands and a land of crystal clear lakes, cool rivers and smouldering volcanoes.

Hup Holland! A Netherlands Bike and Boat Adventure
So how do you get someone who’s not really interested in an “active vacation” to agree to a week of biking?  A boat and bike trip in the Netherlands is one way to do it.  The promise of mellow flat riding interspersed with some cafe-sitting, cheese-eating and canal-cruising worked on my husband, at any rate!
