  April 2008 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Handy Travel Information

We've made a lot of changes on the website this year. We've reorganized our continental directories so you can find stories about the country or state that you're interested in, and we've added a new expedited passport service for people in a hurry and a vast new directory of tours all over the world operated by our partner, IExplore.

Another new feature that can make your next trip a lot more enjoyable is our directory of vacation rentals.

We're not knocking hotels, but when GoNOMAD editors go on vacation, we prefer a rental. It allows you to cook and shop and really become part of the community you're visiting. When you're staying in somebody's house, there's a garlic press and a colander and a corkscrew handy. You can mix your own cocktails, sit on the porch and invite the neighbors over.

So take a look at our listings of more than 20,000 vacation rentals all over the world.

As usual, we're presenting a lot of travel writing talent on the site this month.

Our own Max Hartshorne visits the Winter Carnavale in Quebec City, Sony Stark visits Turku and Helsinki in Finland, Danish writer Connie Maria Westergaard takes a road trip on the Main Street of America, Route 66, and Janis Turk takes a tour of the Four Corners Region of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah based on the mystery novels of Tony Hillerman.

Lisa Lubin reports on her free vacation at Pueblo Ingles, an English language immersion program in Spain and William L. Pohl follows the trail of mountain climber Maurice Herzog in Nepal.

We're happy to introduce you to Anna Etmanska, who takes a truckload of school supplies to kids in Fogo, Cape Verde, in the shadow of an active volcano and Jacqueline Church who takes us on a mouth-watering tour of New Orleans eateries. Order us a plate of barbequed oysters and a Sazerac cocktail at the Cafe Desire. Yum!

We also feature excerpts from two great new travel books: No Man's Lands: One Man's Odyssey Through the Odyssey by NPR humorist Scott Huler and Inca Trails: Tracing the Rise and Fall of the Inca Empire by Martin Li, a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society.

Just another month of top-notch travel writing on GoNOMAD.

Taking a winter bath at Quebec City's Winter Carnavale Quebec City: Getting to Love Being Outside in Winter
The signs being waved by costumed teenagers during Quebec City's Winter Carnaval Night parade said it all. "We get people outside for Carnaval!" I must agree, there is something fun about bundling up and taking on winter head-on. On my first afternoon, I took a walk in the blowing snow. I had come prepared; hey, I live in New England, and we know cold. Not this cold!

A road sign on Route 66

Route 66: The Main Street of America
My boyfriend Claus and I have gotten on a flight to America, rented a white Chevrolet, and set out from Oklahoma City on Route 66 to Los Angeles. To Europeans like us, the Historic Route 66 is somewhat mysterious, legendary and almost synonymous with the American way of life.

Christmas elves in Turku, Finland

Turku and Helsinki: A Tale of Two Cities in a Young Republic
It isn’t everyday that a tired passenger steps off a cramped trans-Atlantic flight into a refreshing pool of frothy suds and cool mineral water. But saunas here are meant to decompress a stiff spine and marinate a sleepy head, especially after a long red-eye.

No-Man’s Lands: One Man’s Odyssey through The Odyssey
As a solitary traveler, with a backpack and no set plans, you place your trust in help – from other travelers, from locals, from the gods. “It doesn’t matter,” you say to yourself. “There’s always room for one more – no matter how busy the town, how crowded the resort, how inauspicious the time of year, how late or unexpected my arrival, there will always be one more room for me, and I will always manage to find it.”

Tony Hillerman

The Four Corners Region: Exploring the Mysteries of Hillerman Country
Three years ago award-winning mystery writer Tony Hillerman endorsed a special “Hillerman Country” tour offered by Scottsdale-based Detours of Arizona. This laid-back literary road trip takes travelers through miles of high desert mountain lands and rocky canyon paths that fictional characters like Navajo Tribal Police Officer Jim Chee and Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn have covered dozens of times in Hillerman’s stories....

A holy man in Nepal

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal: Change on the Horizon
Cars and roads are still a fairly recent phenomenon in Nepal. Just ten years ago, Kathmandu was a sleepy little city of a few million people running around on foot, bicycle and rickshaw. On any given morning outside of the monsoon season, clear views were to be had of the distant Himalaya. Today the place is choking in traffic, fumes and smog, and the new new road promises to bring more of the same to the Annapurna Sanctuary...

A girl in Fogo, Cape Verde

Fogo Means Fire: A Cape Verdean Road Trip
Our first trip to Chã das Caldeiras had been in an air-conditioned tourist bus. Four months later, almost to the day, we were on our way to Chã once again in the back of a pick up truck filled with shouting children, squeaking chickens, and food provisions that would become dinner that night. Our heavy boxes, loaded with books and school supplies for the kids in the village, were the reason for our return to Fogo....

A plate of barbequed oysters at the Cafe Desire in New Orleans

New Orleans is Back and Better Than Ever
Consistently rated as one of the world's top culinary destinations, New Orleans has more restaurants open today than before Katrina. The French Quarter is where you'll find many of the well-known destination restaurants, as well as spots frequented by locals. See GoNOMAD listings for budget hotels in New Orleans

A dancer on the Island of the Sun on Lake Titicaca Tracing the Rise and Fall of the Inca Empire
Inca Trails tells the story of a thrilling journey by mule through the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. My quest was to trace the rise and fall of the Inca empire through a journey from its birthplace in Lake Titicaca, through the remote Apolobamba range of the Andes, to its pinnacle at Cuzco and Machu Picchu, and beyond to the scene of its final stand against the Conquistadores in the densely forested mountains of Vilcabamba....

Students practice their English at a language immersion program in Spain. Habla Ingles? English Language Immersion in Spain
What if I told you that I just had a whole week’s vacation in a four-star villa in a small beautiful village near Salamanca, Spain, and it included three full meals a day with wine and it came with about forty new best friends… all for free? Well, I did. I know what you’re thinking: ‘What’s the catch?’ Well, there was one. All I had to do was speak English. And considering it is my native language. How hard could that be? How to Avoid Altitude Sickness
You are overlooking the most breathtaking scenery in the world and the valley below looks like a tiny, indistinguishable speck. Are you dying? Chances are, you are experiencing altitude sickness...
