Tracing a New River Doi Saket, Thailand
Ask any of today's great adventure writers: Tim Cahill, Paul Theroux, or Robert Young Pelton, and they all agree on one point. "It's been done." Basically everything on this planet which can be done has been. And even more extreme is that with package tour operators making the most remote corners of the globe accessible to everyday people, even formidable obstacles, like climbing The Himalayas are options for the average tourist (more accurately, the average tourist with $60,000, the price of a guided ascent up Everest). Beading off the Beaten Path: Experiencing Maasai Art and Culture
Going on a safari in Kenya can be an exhilarating adventure. Watching giant elephants roam the plains of Africa is a sight not soon forgotten. However, some tour companies use the land and people as an exhibit for profit without ever giving anything back. Fortunately, there has been a movement towards sustainable eco-tourism and some companies now seek ways to work with the members of the local communities. Continue story

Arkansas Ozarks: A Green and Pleasant Land
A recent trip to The Ozarks in Arkansas gave me an appreciation of a very different part of the U.S. Green, lush, full of waterfalls and gently sloping hills, this land is gorgeous. We met folks who absolutely wouldn't live anywhere else. Few Easterners come to this part of the U.S. and they're missing natural beauty, a laidback lifestyle, and some of the best fishing anywhere. Samarkand, Uzbekistan: Where A Seasoned Traveler Can Get Happily Lost
Imagine a city as old as Paris with the sites to match. Imagine a place where the locals are gracious, hospitable and kind. Now imagine a place where a dollar gets you a taxi ride anywhere in town, the shopping is cheap and the food is good. Sound like a fantasy? It’s not. It’s Samarkand and because it is located in the vastness of Central Asia it has the virtue of being both unexplored and utterly devoid of tourists: a traveler’s dream. Continue story...

Lederhosen, Wheat Beer, and an Old World Attitude: Augsburg, Germany
In the Southern part of Germany lies Bavaria, where most things associated with Germany originated. Munich, the largest city in Bavaria, holds one of the most renowned festivals in the world- Oktoberfest.; Lederhosen,;wheat beer (or weiss beer), and the pragmatic conservative nature of Germans are prevalent here in Bavaria.;Early in December I visited the third largest city in Bavaria- Augsburg. Amazing Jordan: Dead Sea, Jerash and Getting Biblical
I’ve reached my low point; in fact it’s the lowest point in the world. I’m bobbing like a cork in the Dead Sea…Jordan side. Nicks and scrapes acquired recently are making themselves known. It all adds to a surreal setting. I am floating with a guy named Carl Thorsen. Who just happens to be here for some peace and quiet after working for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad for the last three months. Carl put it this way; “It took awhile to get used to the peace and relaxation in Amman…for the first two days”. Continue story...

To the End of the Road: A Seven Month Journey from Connecticut to Ushuaia, Argentina
Last year, during a seven-month period, the author drove nearly 25,000 miles in a 1988 Toyota 4Runner from Connecticut all the way to the southernmost city in the world – Ushuaia, Argentina, passing through some of the world’s most beautiful scenery on some of the world’s worst maintained and most dangerous roads. He ended his twelve-country odyssey in Paraguay, where he sold his car and flew home to the USA, forever changed by his life on the road during what was a truly remarkable undertaking. While a full recounting of his journey would require many volumes, the author has agreed to provide us with glimpses and insight into what he experienced. Continue story...

The Traveler's Nightmare: Seated next to the "Ugly American"
The Ugliest American went to Cancun. I should know. She sat next to me…on a 3½ hour flight. The day started out great. My husband and I were leaving the cold of the Midwest and going to the sunshine and warmth of Cancun, Mexico. The plane boarded on time. Flight attendants politely asked people to sit down and buckle up. Only one empty seat on the whole airplane was next to me. The start of a perfect flight to paradise was one minute away.
