Inclusive Junk Mail

There was a strange-looking envelope addressed to Quang in our mailbox. The postage was metered mail. The letter had been mailed in country. The return address, however, was a character script.

I knew it wasn't Vietnamese. Vietnamese is written in a Roman alphabet like English. After our months of travel in Southeast Aisa, I'd seen enough written Thai, Khmer and Burmese to know it wasn't any of those languages. It didn't look Korean either. Maybe Japanese, but I didn't think so. I thought it was probably Chinese.

Curious, I opened the envelope. It was junk mail. It was a letter from Dish Network (the logo gave it away) written in Chinese. A brochure was included that pictured various Asian families smiling into the camera. Even though the letter was for TV service, none of the people pictured in the brochure were watching TV.

I couldn't believe this letter had ended up in our mail. Surely it was there because some computer caught Quang's name, flagged it as "Asian", and landed it on some special marketing list. And yet, as Quang said, "Quang is Vietnamese all the way."
