The Glass Armonica

The Bach Museum

Eisenach, Germany

Photos by Stephen Hartshorne

A glass armonica, invented by a Boston boy. It works on the same principal as the sound you make rubbing a wet finger around the rim of a crystal wineglass. Both Mozart and Beehoven composed works of music for this instrument. Who was the inventor?

Benjamin Franklin of course! He lived most of his life in Philadelphia, but he was originally from Boston. The instrument was invented after Bach's death, but it is included among the museum's collection of musical curiosities.
