Pet-Friendly Hotels on the East Coast

For many pet owners, traveling is great fun, but traveling to a dog friendly destination is even better.

For those who travel with a furry friend or two, the relaxation factor is sometimes missing. Many hotels do not cater to pet owners and their animals. Some hotels are even downright rude to pet owners.

There are some fantastic hotels along the East Coast that are very pet-friendly. They go out of their way to make sure that you and your beloved creature are comfortable and well taken care of. Some of the best pet-friendly hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts along the East Coast are: the Hotel Marlowe in Boston, the Hotel Helix in Washington D.C., and the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth Maine.

The Hotel Marlowe is located in Cambridge Massachusetts, five minutes from downtown Boston. The hotel offers complimentary high-speed internet access and wireless internet access. Guests have access to the gym, kayak and bike rentals, morning coffee/tea hour, and evening wine hour, courtesy of the hotel.

The Marlowe goes out of its way to provide treats for its furry clientele. If your pet has stayed at the Marlowe five times, he will receive a lunch box full of treats! If your pet celebrates a birthday during your stay at the hotel, the hotel will order your pet a cake from the Polka Dog Bakery.

The Marlowe also offers two different pet packages: the "Man’s Best Friend Pampering Kit," which includes a comfy bed complete with a fleece blanket and a box full of treats from Polka Dog Bakery, a Marlowe recommended pet bakery. The "Finicky Feline Pampering Kit" includes a scratching post, a comfy blanket and box full of cat treats from the Polka Dog Bakery.

One happy visitor told TripAdvisor.com that the Hotel Marlowe is “very pet friendly."

"They always have plenty of fresh baked dog treats around," she continued. "In summary, great location, great rooms, fantastic food, and an excellent value!”

A second visitor who stayed at the Marlowe explained, “My husband and I celebrated our one year anniversary in the Boston area. We decided to stay at the Marlowe because we could take our Doberman with us. What an amazing experience! Loved the rooms and the Aveda bathroom products!

"The bed and pillows were so comfortable. The staff was wonderful with our dog, and other people in the hotel appeared to be very responsible pet owners. There is a park nearby where you can take your dog for a walk. It was such an amazing experience to feel so welcomed with our dog. The hotel even had a water bowl and a welcome sign that greeted pets as they checked in.”

Not only is The Marlowe pet-friendly and full of amenities, but it is also close to some of the best spots to visit in Boston and Cambridge. The hotspots including: Quincy Market, Harvard Square, The Freedom Trial, Newbury St, and Fenway Park. You can also catch crew teams racing along the Charles depending upon what season you visit the Marlowe in.

A great choice for a pet-friendly hotel in Washington, D.C. is the Hotel Helix. The Hotel Helix is not your average Hotel, decorated in vibrant colors and funky patterns; it reminds you more of a disco-era club, than a downtown D.C. hotel.

The hotel boasts 178 guest rooms complete with complimentary Aveda products. Complimentary WiFi is included throughout the hotel, as well as a complimentary bubbly hour every night. Guests have access to the Helix Lounge, and, during the warmer seasons, the outdoor patio that accompanies it. The hotel provides a spa service and fitness room to those who wish to pamper themselves or continue their exercise routine during their stay.

In terms of pet services and amenities, the hotel offers great packages and a great attitude towards furry creatures. Guests with pets are automatically provided with food and water bowls. The hotel offers a “doggie-style” package offered to guests that includes: food and water bowls, a dog robe with the Helix logo on it, a dog treat, and a dog manicure and pedicure at Doggie Style Bakery.

The hotel also offers, for a small fee, a map showing great places to walk the dog, or even the cat. Along with the map, doggie scoop bags and a toy are included. When they purchase the map, and receive the treats, guest will even be given access to room service for their pets.

One visitor told TripAdvisor.com, “I brought my (very well-behaved) 100-lb. dog along, and the staff didn't blink an eye. Unlike many other hotels, I wasn't asked to sign a pet waiver or pay a pet deposit -- how wonderfully civilized! As a result, I'll be staying at other Kimpton hotels with my dog very soon. Style on a budget, free champagne, interesting neighborhood, and staying with your dog --what more could you want?”

Another visitor to the Helix, explained that he “went to the Hotel Helix on a recommendation from a co-worker and was so glad I did!! Planned a much-deserved 'girls' weekend in DC' with friends I hadn't seen in awhile. We loved the rooms, the decor, the staff, the bar - all of it. The feeling is very 'Austin Powers meets the Brady Bunch.'

" The rooms are decorated in super bright technicolor designs, but it is a soothing and fun atmosphere, not tacky. Would recommend this to anyone who can appreciate something a little different. The best part is that they allow pets... and my dog loved the place too! The room had a lot of extras like CD player, super-stocked mini-bar (with a lot of unusual items), super comfy beds and a lot of really nice touches.”

The Hotel Helix is conveniently located in the crux of downtown D.C. It’s a block away from 14th Street, which boats great shopping, and a few minutes away from the metro. The White House, Lincoln Monument, and The Smithsonian Institution, can all be reached by a quick ride on the metro. Check out the Hotel helix at hotelhelix.com.

This package also makes a $20 donation to the Humane Society in you and your dog’s name. Upon arrival your room will include: food bowls, a water bottle, blanket, and towel for the dog.

Guests who have stayed at Inn by the Sea have been exceptionally pleased. One visitor told TripAdvisor.com, “We frequent The Inn By The Sea for romantic getaways, especially off-season when Crescent Beach is dog-friendly.

"Although it is a LONG drive, it is worth it for the excellent restaurant, the upscale but very Maine-ish Cape Elizabeth with its easy access to downtown Portland, and the charming staff who bend over backwards to offer agreeable VCR videos/ DVDs at no charge, cookies before bed, and even a bandana for each of our golden retrievers.

" The boardwalk to the ocean is very pretty and the inn even keeps outdoor showers for humans and pups who are salty, sandy, or want to rinse off in warm weather. We travel lots, but this is our very favorite.”

Another visitor says, “I stayed at this inn with my mother, my young daughter, and my dog. The grounds were beautiful, our cottage was comfortable and clean, and the staff was professional. It was well worth the price. I would highly recommend Inn by the Sea.

"For us, it was the perfect Maine vacation; we will definitely be back. Highly recommended for those who want to take their dog on vacation...truly a pet-friendly place.”

For entertainment outside of the Inn, there are a number of different activities to choose from all a short drive away. Shop at L.L.Bean, the Maine Mall, or the boutiques and antique shops in Old Port. You can find art galleries as well, located in the Old Port.
