GoNOMAD Writer Profiles

Kent St. John -- GoNOMAD's Travel Connoisseur: 1955-2012

For ten years, Kent was a big part of the GoNOMAD family, contributing dozens of stories and sharing in all of our successes and tribulations. After a long, hard fought battle with cancer, he passed away on November 22, and will be missed by all of us and the hundreds of his fellow journalists who poured out their hearts with memories of traveling with him on his hundreds of trips over the years. These stories will always remind us of how much Kent loved to travel and sharing it with his incredible photos and well turned phrases--Max Hartshorne, Editor

connoisseur (kä-n&-'s&r)
1: EXPERT; especially : one who understands the details, technique, or principles of an art 2: one who enjoys with discrimination and an appreciation of subtleties

Kent St. John was GoNOMAD's Senior Travel Editor since the website was founded in 2000. During that time he circled the globe many times, visiting more than 100 countries.

Kent enjoyed travel "with discrimination and an appreciation of subtleties," always finding a way to capture the nuances and essences of a destination, whether he was whale-watching in Nova Scotia, riding the rails in Australia, bungee jumping in China or worshipping the sun on a beach in Brazil.

Kent owned a tour company in Arizona for many years before returning to his roots in Cottekill, New York, where he lived with his wife Lisa, a high school English teacher and a published poet. His son Chance, also a GoNOMAD travel writer, was close to Kent throughout his life.

He was also a Contributing Editor for Transitions Abroad magazine and a correspondent for Around the World Radio, which broadcasts on ten stations in California and on thirty throughout Australia. He frequently wrote for Travel International, MSNBC, PreviewMA magazine. as well as other media outlets.

His narratives appeared in several books such as Travelers’ Tales Ireland, Pilgrimage and The Best of Travelers’ Tales. His blog, Be Our Guest, about the Travel Press life was chosen as one of the 100 best travel-related blogs in the world by Frommer’s Budget Travel magazine.

He was a member of the North American Travel Journalist Association. Over the last eleven years he has traveled on assignment to more than 100 countries, many several times. At the time of his passing, he was working on a book titled Be Our Guest, covering the travails and treats of travel writing.
