From a distance, the dunes had looked big, but nothing could have prepared us for how far the sand really did stretch.

But we were there, so we set off across the dunes, feeling as if we were no longer in Vietnam, but the Sahara instead. We dragged our heels and dripped sweat, stopping every 20 steps for a drink of water and a roll of our eyes. Children from the neighboring village, however, ran along side us seemingly unaffected by the sun, heat or weight of the sand.

They carried plastic sleds and lead us to the top of a really big hill. We were supposed to get on their plastic sheets and take a ride down a hill of sand that dropped nearly straight down and ended at a lake. Of course we had to try it.
