Rick and Chris Millikan: Soft Pedal Adventures All Over the World

Much-traveled freelance writer/photographer team, Chris and hubby Rick Millikan live near Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canada’s beautiful west coast.

Former educators, they now present the joys of travel as an inviting 'curriculum' -- globe trotting in search of zany, cultural and historic adventures.

They often go off the beaten track creating stories that appear in syndicated BC Newspapers, in-flight magazines, local magazines, the Vancouver Sun and Province, and, of course, GoNOMAD.com.

Along the way Chris and Rick have encouraged others to plan similar soft pedal adventures based often on in their beautiful, bicycle-friendly Northwest.

Infused with a “cycle logical” perspective, two of Rick’s early fictional tales may be perused in the published anthology Traffic Life at.

And for two years Rick was monthly cycling columnist for Adventure West (Alberta & BC distribution) touting the joys of this green health and meditation machine.

Over the last seven years Rick’s renditions of his Zen Cyclopath trips have appeared regularly in the Vancouver Province.

Rolling our suitcases smoothly past neighborhood bistros to the heritage chateau-style train station, we board Via Rail for a scenic two-hour ride following three glorious days exploring historic Quebec City. We're now off to investigate Montreal and new bicycle adventures.

After checking into our charming boutique hotel, we walk to the edge of Vieux Port to pick up bikes. Numerous bicycles are secured to parking meters along the way. Cycling, we suspect, has become a popular way to get to work.

The busy bike shop manager rents us light hybrid bikes, which include a handlebar pouch, map, lock and icy bottle of water.

Pushing our bikes across the boulevard, we mount up and pedal the dockside trail through a two-kilometer (1.2-mile) linear park lined with grassy playgrounds, pools and floral gardens.

Nearby stands Pointe-a-Calliere where thirty-five colonists landed to found Montreal in 1642. We'll return later to visit its archeological museum and discover the evolution of their early settlement through its extensive underground exhibit. Read more...
