Back to Lapland With Globe Trekker

I went back to Lapland in the middle of the night at least via the TV with Globe Trekker. It made waking up in the middle of the night that much easier. It is close to a year since I traveled to Finland’s Sámi zone. Watching the presenter travel by dog sled, reindeer sled and snowmobile brought back some great memories of one of the world’s best adventures. It did little though for helping me get back to sleep! Missing Lapland, No AC Required

As I was picking out pictures for the GN piece on my recent trip to Lapland I thought I would post a few to cool us in the NE down. The heat index was at about 102% in Cottekill today and I sure thought about the well below zero March trip! As a travel editor I really do not let local weather affect me to much, after all when flowers started blooming here I spent days in April skiing in the French Alps. On the same note I have dealt with massive heat and humidity in Guatemala while my hometown buds were filling wood stoves. Lil and I are heading up the NE coast of Canada soon and I will pack for all types of weather, till then I will just write and wilt!

Team GoNOMAD Gets the Gold in Lapland Rally

On our last day in Lapland we had a road or should I say an ice rally race. Spunky little carts souped up for max power on snow and ice. Spin outs on turns was unavoidable and powering down the stretches mandatory. As the wheel spun snow flashed like a rooster tail from behind these mini motored machines. After a few practice runs we gathered in formula formations for a race for the gold. Vapor steamed my helmet visor as we waited for the flag to drop. In a flash it was time to put the pedal to the metal and down the track we went. After four laps I headed down the stretch and the checkered flag dropped a win for team GoNOMAD and a gold medal for my memories. WWW.scm.fi

Leaving Lapland, Filled with Memories

Today it is time to pack up and head home for a little break. This trip to Lapland has been a great trip, I moved via reindeer sled, husky sled and snowmobile. I had my share of poro (reindeer) and ate well, a must in the cold. After busy days I took the traditional steam suana, heated by logs. Thanks to Ari and his planning I learned much, but it is now time to fly. www.taxari.com

Lapland, Back to the Arctic Circle

I just got invited to Lapland, Finland with a few jumps across the Swedish border for some winter adventure. I remember the cold crisp air from my last trip above the Arctic Circle to Norway in winter, exhilarating. I will certainly need the beard I have grown recently. Fortunately I do like intense winters because I am sure that will be the case. We will be traveling via horse sleigh, snowmobile, dog sled and ice cutter. It will be several evenings of traditional smoke saunas and nights of Kallio saari known in English as northern light watching via snowshoes. I am sure some bottles of Finlandia and Lapin Kulta (Finnish beer) will fit in with some dishes such as poronkaristys. (reindeer hash) Other activities revolve around learning about the Sámi people, what a gig! Accommodations include cottages along the sea such as Wanha Pappila. Max is right, I’ll go anywhere invited.
